I used to live there in the late 70's, and I'm sure that the city has grown since then. The downtown is very nice for an afternoon with a very old church with historic mural inside. It worth the visit. Have dinner at the mariache plaza and experience local culture. Order some Sangria..it's a fruit drink in a bottle but it can also come with alcohol in it...............Tlaqueparque is a small tourist town to shop for local quality pottery, silver, and handmade items.............Lake Chapala is where Gualalajara gets its water so its pretty big.....lots of nice homes where retired americans live. You'll need to rent a cab for the day or rent a car. It may be just as cheap to rent a cabbie for the day . He'll take care of you and show you around. Drivers are dangerous and many times carry a gun so don't drive aggressively. PV is 5-6 hr drive away. Not enough time for both places ........I recommend the local city only on such a short trip..

Hola Wendy!
I was born in the city of Guadalajara. I now live in PV. The city is huge! The downtown is still nice, very colonial and a must see. I recommend that you take the guided tour. Perhaps also a guided tour of Tlaquepaque. If you do decide to visit PV, we are now priviledged to have better highways and thus it is only a 31/2-4 hour drive, many bus lines available as well as airplanes. Write if you have questions.
maria.

Hi Wendy,
I studied abroad last year in Guadalajara and it is an excellent place to visit. Tlaquepaque is okay, but if you really want to go to an excellent street market, then you should go to Tonala instead (there is only a market in Tonala on Thursdays and Sundays). It is not as up-scale as Tlaquepaque, but it is larger, and you can find better bargains there. Some interesting things to do in Guadlajara are: go to the center and look around the cathedral, Plaza de Armas, and try to see the Ballet Folklorico. It is excellent. Puerta Vallarta is a very long five hours by bus from Guadlajara. There is so much to do in Guadlajara, that a trip to PV is not really needed. A trip to consider instead is to Lake Chapala, the largest lake in Mexico, which is only an hour away. Also, you can take a tour of the town Tequila, which is also very close to Guadalajara. If you are there on a Sunday, you might want to ask around and see if there is a bullfight. If you like nightlife, then there are plenty of discos to choose from. I recommend Tropagalia. It is a salsa bar frequented by the locals. You will get the most authentic feel for the city here. Whatever you decide to do remember to keep and open mind and enjoy the experience to the fullest.
