Advice on Belize

I would like to take at least a 7 day trip to Belize. I would like to stay in Belize City because I would like to visit the zoo and the wildlife sanctuary. What else is there to do in Belize City? Would we need to travel outside of Belize City (our trip is just 7 days)?

Thank you for you advice!

I wouldn't advise staying in Belize City. It's not a very nice city and the rest of the country is much nicer. We had 6 nights on Ambergris Caye, then 4 nights in Placencia and 4 nights in San Ignacio. We had an air pass, and we ended up flying back from Ambergris to Belize City for a day trip to the zoo. The zoo was really interesting - quite different from other zoos.

I definitely would advise that you stay outside of the city. We had 1 night there at the end of our trip, and that was really enough.

I agree. Belize City is not the place to stay.

I'd arrive and go strraight to the beach for water activities or toone of thelovely riverside jungle lodges in the Cayo distrcit for ruins, caving,Zoo (en route), canoeing, horses and jungle sightseeing.

I live in Belize City and it's nice enough for me, but if I were visiting, I'd much prefer to spend my time in the jungle and on the beach.

Katie Valk
Belize

As Katie and others have suggested, it is the very rare traveler who would be happy spending seven days in Belize City.

On a seven-day trip, it's probably best to base yourself in Cayo for your wildlife spotting. You could also spend some time in Hopkins or Placencia in Stann Creek.

--Lan Sluder
