i am moving to santiago mid april to teach english. advice on where to meet other americans, where to stay, general suggestions, etc?

Wes,<BR><BR>I live here as well. I assume that you are in you 20's since you will teach english. If so, a great spot to meet gringos is the teachers of US type schools such as Nido De Agulias or "Grange" school. There are alot of young nice types (I should know, I am a director of one of the schools) that are open to travel because they come for 3 or 4 years and then move somewhere else. You could just find a calendar of the school and go to a function like a sports day or something. Also the US embassy does functions that has many people. I was just at the Marines house for the superbowl a few months back. The place was full of 200 gringos drinking beers and eating burgers. Youll find more like this. Hi...I am also coming to Chile in February with my boyfriend to live and work (hopefully). We, however, are not in our 20's. I am a university professor who teaches English and my boyfriend is an attorney with the US Courts in D.C. What advise can you give us regarding finding a job. We are not limited to staying in Santiago.<BR><BR>

Why go to Chile to meet Americans? I would go to meet Chileans myself. If you want to meet Americans you should go on holiday within the USA. If you really want to meet Americans in Chile you could go to Portillo, an American run ski resort, or Providencia, the posh part of Santiagio. If you ask me flying to Chile is a waste of money if you are going to meet Americans and teach English. You won't earn much and it would be cheaper to meet Americans in the USA.

I would guess that such a move might take him out of his usual environment and that he would like to know where to meet folk with whom he could easily communicate. Let's be helpful on this forum, not aggressive.<BR><BR>Wes, the answer is that there is an active American (I hate that word, but what else do I use?) community in Santiago. Contact your foreign affairs department. There is a very active American Womens Club if you have a partner. Nido de Aguilas is a fabulous school with a very active social programme. Even if you will not be working there, you will get lots of help from the staff. If all else fails (which I cannot believe), try an Irish pub at 7pm on a Friday.
