Can anyone help?
We have a 2/3 night stopover in Cancun. I have been to both Cancun and Playa Del Carmen previously and would prefer to stay somewhere less touristy. Does anyone have any suggestions for somewhere outside Cancun but still close (within 1 hour travelling) to the airport.
We usually prefer to be in a town where we can walk and see things, but for a 2 night stay, a remote place would also be ok as long as it had decent facilities and food.
Our budget is not large, maximum $150/day including taxes.

Why don't you look into Isla Mujeres (the little island off Cancun) I'm told it's max 1 hour to the ferry stop and across to it) I have been looking at different hotels, etc for our next trip and you can get reasonable places. Everything I've heard and read is positive. It may be a bit more touristy than you want, but I'm told it's less touristy than Playa.

Downtown Cancun is much less touristy, many more locals, and can be a lot of fun.

We stayed in Puerto Morelos last March for a week. It's just outside of Cancun, but totally different and we enjoyed it.

What about Cozumel. You can fly there in less than an hour. It has a small town you can walk around and eat and shop and there is a nice museum. There are many hotels, large and small, AI or not.

I think I'll look further into downtown Cancun and Puerto Morelos.
Cancun will be a quick stopover in the middle of a long and tiring trip so it really rules out flying to Cozumel - I'll save that for another trip.
