The train continues to Venezia Santa Lucia, arriving at 6:40. That's probably where you'll want to get off.

Hello. I've just come upon this thread. Can anyone address the issue of safety on a night train such as this one? For women travelers? When I was younger, I did this all the time, but now I seem to be a bit wary. Thanks.

I consider all night trains connecting Switzerland with other European cities as safe. Never had any problems.
Trains designated as "Euronights" (EN) have Couchette compartments reserved for women only.
Most of the people you don't want to meet in a night train don't take Couchettes or Sleeping Cars, but coaches.
I think its the best to take one of the upper beds in a Couchette compartment of 4, so you can just store our luggage up there, above the compartment door, where it should be safe.
I've been all over Italy, France, Germany on night trains and have never had a problem.

I'm like the previous poster who prefers the upper bunk. Not convenient if you think you'll need to get up and use the restroom, but there's more room for my stuff up there.

Relax and have a good time!

Good morning, Melissa
Have taken a number of overnite trains
in EUR and found them perfectly safe.
However would seriously check out the
cost of air from Zurich to Venezia and
consider the flite takes just a little
over one hour, by rail would take you
7 hours and with a very early arrival
in Venice and you probably can get into
your hotel room to Noon or later.
Richard of LaGrange Park, Il...
PS from what I can determine from www.rail.ch/ is that on almost all
trains change at Milano, and those
with sleeping cars, it is unclear if
you have to change or the car is placed
on the new train outof Milano. rjv

w

The reference library of a city near you may have the Thomas Cook European Timetable. Table 82 shows that the Gottard night express leaves Zurich at 2207 with a couchette car that arrives in Venice Santa Lucia at 0715. I think the Swiss Rail site may be showing an early arrival which happens if you change trains in Milan.

I agtree with the points people have made as to safety, and add that up in the top berth you are away away from any activty of people boarding late or leaving early.

Please write if I can help further. Welcome to Europe.

Ben Haines, London
