Zurich to Salo
We will be traveling from Zurich to Salo on Lago Garda on Sept 10. Need advice on how to get there. Shoult we train to Milan and then train/bus to Salo? Would it be easier to fly to Milan, then train/bus; or is there a more direct way to get to Salo? We will have a Swiss Trqavel Pass, so that should get us at least part way. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Train is easy but a little long - take the Gotthard Route from Zurich to Milan (may have to change at Brig) via Domodossola to Milan Centrale - change for a regional train to Lake Garda - there are two stops there on the southern tip of the lake - Descenzano and Peschiera de Garda (butchered both names probably
Your Swiss Pass is valid to Domodossola, Italy so buy a ticket from there to your final lake destination via Milan - once at the lake boats go everywhere you want and buses too.
For lots of info on Swiss and Italian trains check www.seat61.com - good info for booking discounted tickets in Italy; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.
You may scour www.sbb.ch - the Swiss Railway's web site for discounted tickets from Zurich to Milan - or even Garda and see what they have - may be cheaper than burning a day on your pass and overall cheaper than the Domodossola-Milan or to Garda part!
The Gotthard route is really scenic though when the new long Gotthard Base Tunnel is soon finished most of the scintillating Alpine scenery will be gone - replaced by tunnel walls - hopefully you'll take the journey before then! (think this August sometime but not sure).

If you fly to Milan Malpensa that airport is a long way out of town - an hour or so just to get into Milan Centrale for trains to Garda. Flying would not be significantly quicker and could be longer - getting to the airport the requisite pre-flight time needed and late planes, waiting for luggage, etc.
And flying could be more expensive.

Zurich - Milan: train is faster than plane
Go by train from Zurich to Milan (4 hrs), change there to a (Venice bound) train to Brescia (45-60 min journey; at least 3 trains/hr) and reach Salo by bus from there (about every 30 min; 1 hrs journey).
