Zagreb, Croatia? Is it worth it?

We will be in Vienna and Budapest in March 2001. We are thinking of visiting Zagreb, Croatia too. Has anybody been there recently? Is it worth it? Any hotel recommendations need not to be first class, but comfortable and centrally located. We are curious about the main visual attractions and, of course, the weather in March.
Also, what about croatian coast? What is not to be missed? What it would be best way to travel from Zagreb to the coast? Is it renting a car a good idea and what are the road conditions in Croatia?

Thanks.
We spent a week in Croatia and loved it. We had friends in Zagreb so we did not stay in a hotel, but my husband has stayed at the Palace Hotel and liked it. Another good one is the Hotel Dubrovnik. Its located in the center of the city.

I would definitely go to Zagreb if you have time. Its a smaller sized city but very quaint.

Hotel web sites:
http://www.zagreb-convention.hr/conv...tro_hotels.htm

To get to the coast, I would fly to either Split or Dubrovnik. The islands of Hvar, Korcula and Brac are wonderful.

Lonely Planet has recently published a guide to Croatia so pick it up! Good restaurant recommendations.

Another nice place to stay is the Esplanade. It is near the train station. But not too far from the Palace hotel (which is very near the US Embassy!).

http://www.esplanade.tel.hr/esplanade/

Definitely rent a car and drive the two hours to Opatija (known as the Croatian Riviera. It is an inexpensive and beautiful place. Lots of boat excursions plus historical sites as well.

Road conditions are wonderful.

I was just in Croatia in June and adored it. Can't wait to return.

Sretan put! (Good trip!)

Dana,
I was in Croatia just this August and it was wonderful!

I would recommend getting a car since the major cities (except Zagreb) don't have any kind of subway system/trams. The roads were in decent condition and we did not have any problems driving there (gas was expensive though $3-$4/gallon)

I would recommend going to Zadar and Dubrovnik, if you can go to an island - I would go to Hvar.

In Dubrovnik - I would recommend Hotel Excelsior, Hotel Argentina, Villa Dubrovnik (although quite pricey).

Let me know if you have any other questions.
Nina

I spent 4 days in Zagreb a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it. I know some people consider it "boring" but I certainly wasn't bored for a minute. Recommended!
