Zadar to Dubrovnik
Hi
My wife and I are contemplating flying into Zadar on 28 or 29 July and then would like to travel to Dubrovnik to stay for a week. Any hints/links please on the trip from Zadar to Dubrovnik and return. My limited research so far suggests ferry or bus may be the best options.
Thanks
Doug

Jadrolinija's coastal ship no longer calls at Zadar, and there is no railway along the coast, so the best option from Zadar to Dubrovnik is the bus. The journey time will be around about eight hours, so you may want to break the journey somewhere (Split is about half way).
Zadar is actually an interesting city and there are lots of ferries to the adjacent islands.

Hi, I just returned from Croatia and did drive up from the south (30 min south of Dubrovnik) to Zadar. The roads are coastal and therefore slow going at times, not to mention lots of curves and turns. It's beautiful, passsing thru villages and with great coastal views but also bit stressful. After 3 hours of driving towards Split, we jumped onto the new A1 and took that the rest of the way to Zadar. It took a little less than 6 hours. We had used Michelin to map it but parts of the A1 (in the south) aren't built yet (or are newly built) so Michelin didn't even list it as an option until Split. Given you're doing this in reverse, I would suggest taking the A1 until the end and then the coastal road down to Dubrovnik. You do have to pass thru Bosnia but no problem, just have your passports available if you need to stop. Be careful with your driving speed around the borders as we saw many police stopping lots of cars. It could have just been that day (Wed, July 4th) but we saw 4 radar/police stops within 30km north of Bosnia. We stayed in a great place in Zadar, 5km outside of the old town but directly across from the beach. Villa Ivana (www.villa-ivana.com). Great studio rooms and breakfast for 100Euro (for 2). Enjoy.

We took the bus from Zadar to Dubrovnik in June and it was very easy. We did stop in Split and really enjoyed it. The roads were mostly one lane in each direction and very twisty/windy. It reminded me of Rte 101 up the US West Coast.
I believe our tickets were about $50/$60 US. The busses had a/c and were comfortable. Get a seat on the right so you can see the water.
And don't forget that you go through a border checkpoint in Bosnia - there were people on our trip who didn't realize that and weren't prepared.
Have fun!!

Drive it from Zadar...roads are well maintained, great views and pullouts..we can make it from Split in four hours taking our time. A few years back, we came over from Ancona by ferry and rented our car in Zadar, headed north on the new supurb, super highway to end all super highways, to Plitvice..stayed two nights, drove back to Split...spent two nights and drove down the coast to Dub. (I had driven the former Yugolsavia when most roads were a nightmare with potholes bigger than your swimming pool!)...
you will love Croatia..
