Its all a matter of attitude. Who you are with, and how well you get along with them, is as important as any city. And you may be surprised that your opinion of who you are and who that person is-may change.
Allow for whimsy- a first trip should never be tied to an itinerary. Save that for later. Buy a Eurrail pass and get off when things look good, and move on then things don't.
Always plan to go back-that way wherever you are, you can enjoy what you see, and if you don't see everything, that's just fine. When you get off the train in a city- look for other travelers (who are of a different nationality preferably) and compare notes. You might make some new friends.

Take a trip to Bologna because you heard the pizza is good. If its raining in Paris, go to Spain. I will never forget the fun I had meeting all sorts of folks in odd places. The country I was in, was far less relevant.
Pardon the lecture, am reminiscing back to my first long wander across Europe-35 years later-and I still treasure it all. Did I do anything special-no. I went, I had fun, I came home and got a job. Never did tell my parents everything. And I still keep going back!
