York-Hadrians Wall-Yorkshire Dales

We plan to take the train from London to York, then drive to the Yorkshire Dales and Hadrian's Wall. Which city is best to stay and what hotels do you recommend? We plan to spend 2 nights there and then take the train to Bath.<BR>is it possible to pick up a car in York on a Sunday afternoon?

We stayed in Corbridge a small town - extremely convenient for the Wall and it has a Roman ruin of its own just outside of town - Corstopitium (sp?). Plus it is an attractive town with several nice restaurants. You really are not allocating enough time though - the Wall alone takes at least a day to see the major sites (DONT miss Housesteads)

Corbridge is not so far from Blanchland, a very picturesque little village. The pub Lord Crewe Arms was originally built in 1235 as part of a monastery. It´s possibly to stay over night there.

Do you have any names and numbers of hotels you would recommend?

Blanchland is 10 miles south of Hexham, on road number B6306. Lord Crewe Arms tel. (01434) 67 52 51, fax 67 53 37. &pound;110 in 1999. It´s a good base for Hadrian´s Wall when you have a car.
