Venice is great. I wouldn't say relaxing. You walk a LOT. There is so much to see and do. We enjoyed every minute of it.
Hawaii, I've never been to.
I'll leave it up to someone who's been to both to tell you.

Ana

If you can stroll in the moonlight across little arched bridges, have drinks or coffee in St. Mark's Square at midnight while listening to the classical music (or jazz), sit by an open window dining on superb food while boats glide silently by in the canal below, or take a moonlight ride on a gondola -- and not be even more in love than you already are, then there is something wrong with you. It is the most romantic city in the world!

Carrie --

I have been to both Hawaii (several times) and Venice (once). BOTH are extremely romantic but as Ana suggests, Venice is not very relaxing. And Hawaii can be as relaxing as you want it to be. You'll find romance in both locales so I think it's just a matter of how much R&R you want.

Having said all that, I would choose Venice over Hawaii, hands down! For me, sitting in San Marcos square in front of one of the "dueling orchestras" on a cool evening, sipping wine with the man I love is one of the MOST romantic experiences I have ever had. Not to mention an evening gondola ride! I wouldn't trade that experience for ALL the relaxation in the world!

Happy wedding and honeymoon! (p.s. I'm getting married in June -- in Fiji!)

I just got back from Venice on Sun. It was an amazing city. The food is wonderful. You can take water taxis to other island areas (morena). There is no other city in the world like it. I would describe it as charming. Hawaii is beautiful and very relaxing. Where are you thinking about in hawaii? They are two totally different types of vactions. From Venice you could also take a day trip to Florence and Milan. Best of Luck.

YES!!! Venice is a lovely honeymoon destination as long as you and your betrothed ask for his and her nose clips as a wedding gift. I think Crate and Barrel have ones made of high density rubber and porcelain. You'll be lucky if you can breathe through those mamas. If you don't wear them, you'll really be on The Bridge of Sighs.
You might also want to request some head covering to thwart the inevitable pidgeon pooplets in St. Mark's Square.

Hi

Venice is relaxing in a way that few places are. Its not relaxing like a resort or beach town. There are no cars in Venice. There is no feeling like living for a week at a walking pace with only the sounds of the Vaporetti and the river traffic.

We find Venice to be very relaxing in that once you are outside of San Marco, the accademia and a few other main tourist areas, you are away from the tourists! The food is superb if you know where to go (we love Alle Testiere, Fiaschetteria, Do Mori, Da Pinto and Achuiguette). Also incredibly relaxing is a trip to Torcello or Murano (don't go to the Il Faro stop where all the tourist traps are but go to La Colonna where the very wonderful high end shops are congregated such as Murano Collection, Schiavon, Vennini etc.

Do go to Venice!

Carrie - I have only been to Venice in September and during Easter Week. I think it is an amazing place. But, I must say it is not a place that I find relaxing. Whenever I have been there it has been wall to wall people, except in the early morning and late evening. It was also cold. We inched out way through the crowds everywhere we went. And, yes, pidgeon poop is everywhere.

Yes, you can get away from the zone that lies between the Piazza San Marco and the Rialto bridge, but it isn't terribly attractive. There are not parks or piazzas where you can sit without paying an arm and a leg for a drink. So, in spite of the absense of traffic noise, I don't find it relaxing to be on my feet walking all day long. After about three days I found myself very claustrophobic from the crowds.

Sorry to offend the Venice lovers...but the whole time my husband and I were there (don't get me wrong..you've got to see Venice someday) we kept asking each other how it is that some say Venice is for Lovers. Our choice for romantic city would be Paris, hands down..or even Rome, for that matter, but not Venice. Don't go all the way to Italy and only visit Venice. The Amalfi Coast or Ligurian Coast might be romantic, but I don't think October would be an ideal month.

I think Hawaii can be relaxing, but this depends on where you stay. Alot of people expect the Hawaiian Islands to look like Tahiti or Bora Bora, but they are pretty developed. Honolulu/Waikiki for example, are very urban and congested and touristy. Also, airfare to Hawaii can be pretty expensive. I wouldn't recommend it, for example, if you have to fly from the East Coast of the US as this is a pretty long trip. However, certain places on Maui and Kauai are delightful.
