Would Florence be a good base city?
We want to visit Pisa, Assisi, & Siena.
We will not have a car...train only.

From what I have heard/read. Pisa & Assisi only require 1/2 a day.

So should we book a hotel in Florence for 5 nights & just take the train to Pisa one morning & come back that night? Same thing for the other two cities...

comments appreciated

There's so much to see and enjoy in Tuscany, I would skip Pisa. There's not much to see there after you've seen the tower... As for Assisi, yes, a half a day is enough.
Also, there's lots of places to see besides those you mentioned.
I understand from your post that you are spending 5 days in Tuscany. You have many options, including the one you suggested of staying in Florence. You can also stay in Siena, or split the time between them.
You can get just about anywhere using public transportation.
For more info on places to visit, check out my site-
http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/5733/index.html
Chris:
When doing Assisi (half day), go to Perugia (half day) as well.
Don't miss Siena, though. I just love it.
Pisa, correct, you could skip that, once you've seen the tower..
PS: Lucca is a nice and typical town as well.
But, like this, there's not much left for Florence, where you easily could stay for a whole week.
Have a nice trip!

Hello Chris,

Yes, - I think Florence would definitely be your best choice as a base.

I wouldn't 'skip' Pisa; IMO it's only worth half a day, - but spend the other half in Lucca. Together they make a nice day-trip.

Personally I think you need a full day to see Assisi properly, - it has so much to offer, it's a real gem. I'd say go there first and if you think you've seen it all in a few hours, O.K., - stop off in Perugia on the way back.

You could also combine Orvieto and Spoleto, - the options from Florence are enough to fill 2 weeks...

Steve

Hello Carol,

Yes, you're right of course! Orvieto and Spoleto don't combine very well by train... My mistake!

Chris: For Orvieto+Spoleto read
Orvieto and Cortona! That's an easier combination, both lovely...

Steve

Thanks for all of your suggestions...this will make it a lot easier on us. By only having to book one hotel room in Florence for 5 nights, we won't have to pack & unpack our bags as much.

Now I just need to find that hotel. Guess I will run a search from this forum.
