Worst habit of a traveling companion

Please forgive me sis, cuz I really do love you, but not as a travel companion. Try grinding teeth every night, constantly talking about how much she misses her children and wonders what they are doing, can't speak the language, but yells when she talks to locals, like that will make them understand her better, compares the beautiful frescoes and artwork work in Uffizi to a woman who does faux finishes on HGTV, and the best, shops nonstop at all the tackiest souvenir stalls for her kids, making sure each (5) kids have exactly the same amount of souvenirs. She would have it all exact, then see something that --- would just love and then, you guessed it, we'd have to find four more things. She would drink wine for dinner, then complain that she couldn't sleep cuz she drank wine, she slept, cuz she ground her teeth all night, but the next night, she would drink wine again. I'm going solo this year.

The worst travel companion is my friend. She will never read one thing about where we are going, and so has no ideas of what she wants to see. So I am the one making all the decisions, which she later critizes in a nice way of course.
I say "where to today?"
She says "I dont care." "Anywhere"
Me: "Well, then, let's go to *****"
Her: "OK"
Later:
She: "Oh, we missed the ***** I really wanted to see it."
Me: "Why didn't you say so?"
She: "Well, I thought you didn't want to see it."
She is a lovely person, and now when we are on the plane I try to plan what we both want to see, and put it on a scale of one to ten.
Lovey, maybe you should introduce your friend to an eproctophiliac - do a search for 'eproctophilia' - then put an ad on the internet.

Personally Lovey you sound as if you could benefit from letting a few rip a bit more often - all that contracting, tightening, suppression can be good for you.....

My husband and I are perfect travel companions after 38 years of marriage! We love going places together, by ourselves. We have lots of friends who NEVER travel alone as couples----they always go with other couples. We hate always having to get a consensus for any activity, and having to decide on where and when to meet, ---and of course, what to wear?!?To say nothing of having to wait for those who are chronically late. Sometimes I think we are too independent, but after reading this thread I can see we have been right!

I've traveled with people who MUST eat lunch at exactly 12:00 noon. It doesn't matter where we are or what we're doing, at 12:00 we must find lunch. If we're in the middle of something, they won't consider getting a snack to hold them, they must have lunch. What a pain!

My spouse and I tend to walk pretty fast so most anyone we travel with is slower, which drives us crazy. We plan our day and then realize we'll only get to half of it because we're going along at a snail's pace.

Needless to say, we prefer traveling alone. We're perfect travel companions for each other and have a ball together!

Nancy, your message about the travelling companion who wouldn't shut up really really hit home. A few years ago I got to go on a Safari in Tanzania.. dream trip of a life time.. there were only 5 other people in the group..everyone turned out fine but this one woman.. OH MY GOSH.. she didn't shut her mouth one moment, it was like the constant purr of an engine.. and talk about BANAL!! She was from some little town in Iowa.. and it was like "well my brother's first wife had a goiter, which made her grow three dress sizes in two days, which would have been ok, since her ex boyfriend from highschool, he owns a mini-mart down the street from where I grew up, he says that since the baby got measles, he really likes her with the extra weight...." ad nausium...
Ok.. I just saw my first LION for heaven's sake.. everyone else in the van was whispering or looking on in SILENT, awe/appreciation, and there is miss motor mouth rambling on. I got so I just spent the entire time with my head out of the window, so that the wind would blow the incessant drone out of my brain. Finally I asked her to kindly shut up.. it lasted 3 seconds.. then "well my sister who works at the Wal-Mart by the BP.. just had a kidney stone..."

I have no choice but to travel with some of my in-laws now and then, and it seems to be in the blood of this entire clan to be unable to move or make a decision until about 2 pm. We spend the morning hanging around -- if they can't make breakfast last all morning (the B&B kicks us out), they manage to find homey little chores like washing out underwear, writing postcards, manicures, or just putzing and putzing moving things from suitcase to bureau, closet to suitcase, endlessly.

Suddenly it's lunchtime (and like the traveler with the 12-o'clock-high companions above, they MUST eat, even if they just finished breakfast 90 minutes earlier), and by 2 or so, they get around to talking about what they might see that day.

I can't tell you how often we have finally made it to a museum by 3:30 or 4 pm and then they are astonished when we are kicked out just an hour later. "Wow, people are sure in a hurry to get us out," is a frequent comment.

My husband is always astonished, when we travel with my relatives, that we've actually seen something interesting and "it's only lunchtime."
