Companies like Stephen Ambrose and Three Whales run tours that take in various points on the Eastern Front. If you have good Russian, then the choice widens considerably. Alpventures is a US agency that often seems to book North American visitors onto Russian-led tours of the Eastern Front sites (inc. the siege of Leningrad, Moscow, the Battle for Stalingrad (Volgograd), Kursk and Prokhorovka). There are several multi-country tours that combine the Russian Federation with Finland, the Baltic States, Ukraine, Poland, etc. Hope these few thoughts help for starters, tho' I must confess it's not a topic I know much about. Just happened to run across the companies mentioned here during my travels in eastern Europe.

Never tried any of these myself but Holts has been going for some years. You are leaving things late if you want to do this in August.

Hey, I'm confused. Which war(s) are we talking about. Iraq? Some wars in the Pacific? Or Europe? I guess the most dramatic front in the Great Patriotic War (WW2) was along the west of Russia. Enormous scope for designing your own tours from Yalta up to Finland. and plenty of eastern European companies in that market. Try Three Whales.

Since you mentioned WWII I assume that's the one you want to go on but not sure where as so many fronts, aslects, etc..
Tours-International offers various tours which you can chain together or add on to your own. I've gone on two with them and have had the expertise of Will Cavanagh and Danny Parker - both preeminent folks in this field.
What impressed me was the stories accumulated from years of talking with the GI's for research of books on on these tours. I rarely heard any Generals names but all the Pvts, Sgts and LTs who made such a huge difference.

My family recently toured battlefields, monuments, and cemeteries relating to both World Wars with Doug Gangler (www.ww1and2-specialtours.com). He picked us up at the airport with a van and was our driver, guide and historian. We did the Battle of Verdun, Meuse-Argonne, Battle of the Bulge, etc. Last year we toured Normandy and the historical places relating to the landings on D-Day and afterward.
