World Dart Championships

Just tuned into ESPN 12 and what do I find? World dart championships. Well I didn't see anyone that wasn't from the UK. Are darts a very popular activity in the pubs? Do they only play 501 or do they play cricket as well? As an aside the conestants were all dressed as bowlers in the US would. Also, the crowd seemed to be very into it. thereyet

It's not exactly mainstream, no.

Traditional pubs will usually have a dartboard and a set of darts you can borrow, modern pubs rarely do. Some trad pubs have a team and join in a local league.

You'll occasionally see a game being played among friends.

I'm surprised there were no Dutchmen taking part. It is very popular here, and they are very good at it. There are two organisations that run darts championships, and "Barney" Raymond van Barneveld, switched last year to play his hero Phil Taylor, and beat him.
I am surprised it is being shown now, both championships were in January/February. The only darts on at the moment is in Holland.

I know all this as my son has to do the Dutch TV coverage of nearly all darts tournaments.

And a world championship with only UK layers is no worse than a World series with only US teams.

hatismij, I don't know for sure if others weren't envolved. I only got to see about 15 mins. of it. I did catch it was being held near London and they all looked pretty serious about it. Funny too sbout the World series. I always wondered why it was called such. pretty ethnocentric of us yanks I would say.
I am glad someone got a kick out of my guess about taffya but I am still wondering what the heck it is, dumb yank that i am. thereyet

I play darts (and I look like a darts player). As said there are teams that play in a league (which I do). All competetive darts is 501. In the pub however there are other games played like cricket and killer.

Oh I can picture you now Audere! Are those like Tuesday night league, Thursday night league, etc...? Do they have a ladies league too?

Watching the tournement those guys were killing the triple 20. Nice grouping ala Young Frankenstien.

Yes it's a monday night thing in the winter. There is indeed a ladies team - although "ladies" is being charitable.
