Go for it. There is no law, nor person in Europe who would look down upon a person who would do this. Besides, unless your clothing got soiled, visibly, no one would know. And if you know anything about Europe, particularly Italy, the locals do it regularly. I think I have encountered the worst body odor, and foulest people in the world here.

In my hosteling days I used to bring only 2 or 3 of everything: 2 t-shirts, 2 pairs of jeans, maybe 3 pairs of underwear and 3 pairs of socks. For nighttime, I brought some satin nightwear, which took up almost no space at all. No one is going to care or notice that you wear the same shirt 2 or 3 times in a week. Bring one sweater in case you get cold. Bring a little thing of Woolite (I managed to find little packets of it) and wash your undies every other night and hang them out to dry overnight.

In London I also managed to find a combo soap/shampoo/conditioner from Nivea, so that cut down a lot on bulk, but I've never seen anything like that here in the States. Maybe you could find it at your destination.

I packed all my stuff in an LL Bean book pack. It's 1500 cubic inches, it's only about $35 and is practically indestructible, and will fit under an airplane seat. If you roll all your clothes you will easily get everything in there and have room to spare for souvenirs.
