wing it or plan it?
My husband and I are going to Cornwall and Devon (possible S Wales for a couple of nights) in late May. The last time we went over (went to London, Bath, Wales and Ireland)I planned all B&B's and made reservations. The problem was that we wish we had more time at certain places (Wales) and less time in others (Ireland) but since they were all booked we felt we couldn't do much about it (ferry over was booked and paid for) Has anyone out there just let the roads take them where they may? Just staying where
ever you happend upon and if you wanted to stay another night you did and didn't ahere to a set schedule?
Most tourist office run a thing called "Book a bed ahead".

This allows you to know that when you get where you are going that night you will be able to lay your weary head somewhere.

Why not organise you first night's accommodation and then rely on that scheme- thus allowing you the best of both worlds?

A few years ago we did just as you suggested, almost winging it. Had great fun. The time of year you travel is critical, and late May should be ideal. If you were to travel out there in July or August, that would be another story. In some spots we used the local tourist offices. They were a great help. Otherwise, we kept our eyes open for signs along the way. Had some marvelous adventures, warm hosts, great quarters.

It entirely depends on your personality. I travelled 3 times to Europe and just winged it. Three times (once with my sister and twice with my wife who both liked to know where they were sleeping that night), I have set fixed itineraries. On the first, I experienced the same as you - not enough time at certain places. On the third time, I ended up forgoing 2 days of deposits and changing my schedule.

I have never had any trouble finding a place - even when bicycling (and therefore limited in my mobility). you should have no trouble in May.
