You will be near the famous Chianti region of Italy--suggest you buy a wine guide to Italy. Also in Tuscany is Montelcino and Montepulciano famous for their wines. There is a hotel/wine museum in Torgiano owned by the Lungarotti family, a famous wine family. Too many for me to tell you about, you need that book. (be aware also that unlike the U.S., much wine tasting is done in the enotecas (wine rooms) in the centers of the towns rather than at the specific wineries. There is a very famous enoteca in Siena where you can taste most of the wine of Tuscany.

Dan,
Don't know much about wine, I'm just a poor ole beer drinker. However, I do know what I like. Try going to Orvieto. Home of the Orviieto Classico and the vineyards are just a short distance form the little town. Not only is the wine good, but the little town of Orvieto is right out of a postcard.

Orvieto is a beautiful classic Tuscan hill town---great food, and interestiing and contraversial cathedral, and good Orvieto wine--it's a white wine, however, and we have been talking about the beautiful reds--Chianti Classico, Brunello and Vino Nobile. I like the whites also--either the Orvieto or Vernaccia from San Gimignano which is another remarkable Tuscan Hill Town. You really can't go wrong. Just go and enjoy.

Dan, the famous enoteca in Sienna is called (unsurprisingly) Enoteca Italiana. Closed, alas, on Sundays; open rest of the week from early afternoon until past midnight. As for the rest of the Chianti area, check www.chiantinet.it and www.chainti.it. Better yet, get into your car and check them personally.... BTW, after some personal reaearch I did 2 weeks ago, don't settle for less than the "Riserva" quality of Chianti Classico. Best price/performance you can get, at around 17.000 lire per bottle. The Vino Nobile would be ca. 21.000 and Brunello - 40.000 . While at it, if you pass by Firenze, try the Il Lattini restaurant. It's one of the best wholesome Tuscan restaurants this side of Manhattan.
