Winchester/Jane Austen
Does anybody have knowledge or been to Jane Austen's house which is about 15 miles outside of Winchester and is there a way to get there by public transportation from Winchester other than a taking a tour out of London or taking an expensive taxi?
Please advise. Thank you.

Estelle-since it has been several years since I made the trip, I can't remember exactly how I got from Winchester to the house, but I know it was cheap and easy and public since I was at the end of a summer's worth of eurailing and thus had no money, no car, and little patience left. I was using Let's Go Europe at the time, but I'm sure any guidebook would list the information, and if not you can just ask the tourist office once you get there. I was very glad I made the trip. While you're there, be sure to go to Winchester Cathedral and find her marker.

Sorry I can't be more specific.

Estelle,

If you are a fan of Jane Austen and are planning a trip to her house, I'd suggest checking out www.pemberley.com. Its a mecca for anything Jane and lots of fans have posted their itineraries for Jane-centered trips to England. They may have some details on transportation to her house and other activities in the area.

Her house is in Chawton, by the way, and she is buried in the Winchester Cathredral. If you're also heading towards Bath, they have recently opened the Jane Austen Centre there in Queen's Square. When I was in Bath recently, I noticed they offered escorted tours to Chawton and Winchester from the Centre. You may want to check out their web address and see if they have any info, or email them for details, http://www.janeausten.co.uk/welcome.htm

Have fun!

The February, 2000 issue of "In Britain" magazine arrived yesterday. In it is an ad for Jane Austen's House in Chawton with the following public transport advice:
1. Trains from London Waterloo to Alton hourly & taxi on. [editorial comment, it looks to me to be about 2 miles from the Alton station to Chawton Village, so the taxi should only be a couple or 3£, I would think]

2. Stagecoach buses from Winchester or Guildford (Mon-Sat No.X64; Sun No. 65), alight at Alton Butt and walk to Chawton Village (10 min).
