Wimpy's

I haven't been to London in over 10 years, but am going back soon. Does anyone know if the Wimpy's hamburger chain is still around? The burgers are so bad that after awhile you develop a tolerance for them. Kind of like White Castle. Are there any Wimpy's near Earl's Court?

Dear Doug: I've been going to London fairly regularly over the years since my first trip in 1957 and must say I've not seen ANY Wimpy's for quite a while. There ARE burger joints of every designation but I fear Wimpy's is gone to burger Heaven. Sorry.
Joan

I've never been to England, but my friend went four or five years ago. I know that she got sick off Wimpy's burgers, but that they were definitely still around then!

Isn't Wimpey's (or is it Wimpy's, as in the old Popeye comic strip), a huge construction firm in the UK?

Maybe they're using construction debris for hamburger!

Oh,well. . . --Aj

Just got back from the U.K. and saw a Wimpy's in Brighton (southern coast, about an hour from London). Have also seen them in Spain.
I was watching "Vets in Practice" on Animal Planet last night. The show is set in England and while one of the vets was walking around in someplace in Devon, I saw a big Wimpy's burgers place right behind him.

Back in the 70's I ate at a Wimpys in Paris. The thing that I remember about it was that their french fries were flavored. Does anyone know how they did that?

Wonderful to ressurect such an old thread.

27 years before this thread, as a semester abroad student in London, I subsisted largely on the Wimpy's egg burger -- a dubious patty topped with fried onions and a perfectly round fried egg. Expect my palate has changed but I remember them fondly.

I was always a Popeye fan and, being a student, Wimpy's promise to pay Tuesday for a hamburger today had some resonance.
