As a fan of Luxembourg city I just wanted to add to the praise of this wonderful little nook of Europe. I will agree the average traveler might not have a lot of interest in Luxembourg but who wants to be average? I didn't go hiking there but we did walk the city and there is a beautiful valley right through the middle of the city. In the valley there is an ancient church that is cut right out of the wall of the valley. Really charming.

I lived and worked in Lux City during the summer of 1993 for a graduate student internship. Luxembourg is a great discovery for those who take the time. The "valley" someone mentioned above (called the Grund), is beautiful and visiting the stone church built into the wall is a favorite. Other great suggestions from other posters that I agree with: boat ride on the Moesel and trip to Vianden. Trier is a short jaunt away (OK, with such a small country, everything is a short jaunt away). Sitting in Place d'Armes and people watching or listening to live music was a great way to relax. I found the city clean, friendly and easy to get around. Because so many nationalities converge there to work, English is spoken by many. I rarely had to use my lame French, which is probably a good thing. My two words from the Lux dialect: Addis (I'm sure I spelled that wrong), which my host family used to say goodnight when we were going to bed or going out in the evening, and moyen, which we were greeted with every morning at breakfast. Enjoy! I miss it.
