"you don't remember what happens when you're asleep.."

Maybe not, but I sure do remember what happened when I was AWAKE in that expensive hotel room bed!

Ziana,

The insurance institute for highway safety rates cars for safety. The Honda Civic is highes rated (gold) among small cars. Among midsized cars, the highest rated are a Saab and a Subaru (gold); the BMW 3 series is rated below them (silver), as are some Audis and Volkswagens, and a few others.

I think it is likely that size does matter, and if that is so, get a Ford or Mercury, highest rated among large cars.

I started reading this thread just for the heck of it but I feel compelled to defend my Paris choice. I stay at the Paris Hilton. Now, I've stayed at less expensive hotels and more expensive ones, too. Why do I stay at the Hilton? I stay for at least two weeks so a large room is what my DH and I prefer - we get that at the Hilton. A bed as comfortable as at home? Yep. Hot water with good pressure any time of the day or night, uh huh. Location, location, location - we love the 7th. Staff that can't be beat - they actually appear to love their jobs and do a wonderful job of making us feel welcome. We're Hilton Gold members so we have access to the Exec Lounge - the champagne corks start poppin' at 11:00 and you can sit, enjoy the view and drink champagne till the cows come home. We've always met friendly and interesting fellow travelers. The consierge can always get that preferred restaurant reservation. The business center is very good. And, when I get a jones for a cheeseburger, room service or the hotel restaurant makes a great one.

bob: bedbugs can happen anywhere, from homeless shelters to 7 star hotels; bedbugs don't depend on how clean the place is, as they only feed on mammalian blood, not refuse and such.

I tend not to be so trusting when it comes to surveys and public opinion records.
And if I did I could be dead by now when I found an article that said Advil is not permitted with certain pills i am taking so use Tylenol!!! and next paragraph said that Tylenol even worse!!! So you think if you buy Ford no one will give you insurance reduction. And those guys DO know their business.'And I was talking about BMW 740 btw...
And I bet if i put my time into it I will go and find totally different result, I might just go and do it!lol

Took me a sec

Safest cars, from sedans to SUVs
Consumer Reports publishes its results in five categories:

Upscale and large sedans. The Lexus ES300, the Audi A4 and the BMW 330i topped the charts. The Buick LeSabre Limited and Chrysler 300M came in at the bottom of 14 vehicles tested in this category.

Family sedans. The Volkswagen Passat GLX (V6) came in at number one, with the Toyota Camry XLE (V6) close behind. The four-cylinder Passat GLS, the Nissan Altima 3.5 SE and the Subaru Legacy also did well in this category. Safety dogs were the Pontiac Grand Prix GT, the Oldsmobile Alero and the Pontiac Grand Am.

Small cars. Volkswagen also took top honors in the battle of the bantamweights. The VW Golf TDI came in at No.1. Close behind was the Honda Civic EX and the Volkswagen Jetta GLS TDI. Trailing in this category were the Hyundai Elantra GLS and the Chevrolet Cavalier LS.

Pickup trucks. In the full-sized pickup category, pole position went to the Toyota Tundra SR5 4.7, the Dodge Ram SLT 4.7 and the Ford F.150 XLT 5.4. Taking the top honors in the compact crew-cab pickups were the Toyota Tacoma TRD (V6) and the Nissan Frontier (V6). Rated as poor were the Dodge Dakota SLT, the Chevrolet S-10 L5 (V6) and the GMC Sonoma 5LS (V6). "Pickups generally don't do well in these assessments," says Champion. "They usually don't protect the driver in crashes and some of them have poor brakes and sloppy handling."

Sport utility vehicles and minivans. In the small-sized SUV category, the top vehicles for safety were the Saturn VUE (V6), the Honda CR-V EX and the Hyundai Santa Fe GLS (V6). In the midsized category, the winners were the Lexus RX300, the Acura MDX and the Toyota Highlander. SUVs that did poorly were the Chevrolet Trail Blazer, the GMC Envoy and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. As for minivans, the Honda Odyssey EX, the Toyota Sienna LE and the Mazda MPV LX all did well. But the Chevrolet Venture LS, the Oldsmobile Silhouette GLS and Pontiac Montana fared poorly.

Zania, thanks for asking about birthdaygirlstrip. I too assumed it was a stripping birthday girl. How funny. Suddenly my imagery is totally shattered.

I am so glad you said it because I am feeling like 'dirty minded' for about 20 min now.
You helped me to clean up...realizing I am not the only one helps TONS! Also I hope it will help our college graduate to choose wisely later on...Thanks again

robjame,

Although I said "I don't pay E300, etc." to your question earlier, that's not exactly true. It depends with whom I'm traveling. Some people really enjoy a nice-and-pricey hotel (hi, Mom!). Years ago I had a boyfriend who was one of those if-it's-cheaper-it's-got-to-be-better types. That attitude drove me crazy too, although it bugged me more in terms of restaurants and clothing than hotels.

Cheaper isn't always better. More expensive isn't always better either. But getting a good night's sleep and having a satisfied travel companion: priceless.

hypatia, since you're quoting me, it might be nice if you realize that like many others here, I expanded the topic a bit. You might also notice I was talking about hotels in Europe in general -- and my specific example was in Munich, not Paris.

I'm not sure that such a thing does exist in Paris -- which remains one of the greatest "bargain centers for charming small hotels" in the world, in my opinion. Then again, I've never looked at the Mercure and Accor type hotels in Paris. Quite possibly they are less than some of their "charming" counterparts. LarryJ, care to comment?

you are right Neo...probably because of the height restrictions....and the historic center...I wouldn't personally want to be that far afield at the Hilton..
.I agree with you as far as stateside..a b&b can be expensive for the sevices you get and the prices online for the large hotels are really good!! I got a studio slopeside at the canyons spa and resort last year (christmas)for just 120$ a night...saw Montel there too...and he can afford better

It's very often possible to get a Mercure or Novotel or Holiday Inn in the 75-100 Euro range in Paris through direct booking, although not in the most prized arrondisements.

With Priceline or Hotwire, it's quite possible to get a 4* business-class hotel in Paris for something under 100 Euros per night - but again, usually not in the most prized areas. (The Paris Hilton is in the 15th, so wouldn't be considered a prized area by many.)

It's often possible to get a very central 4* Superior Plus hotel on Priceline (like the Westin Paris) for rates that work out to about 170 Euros per night.

Sorry but I have to respond to birthday girl's comment about the poor vs. rich.

In my profession, I have to deal with the poorest of the poor and the richest of the rich. And the reality is...

People are just that, People.

I have met homeless people and poor families that in spirit and mind are richer and happier than the wealthy. I have met wealthy people that are snobs and think that $ makes them better than others. But I have met wealthy people with a heart of gold who treat people with dignity and respect.

To each there own. Who are we to judge one another. I just saw (read) it as ironic that you have disdain for the wealthy because you think they look down on the poor, but are you not in return looking down on them for having $?

I apoligize in advance if I read the post wrong. No need for hysterical bashing from anyone.

I'll tell you why I love to stay at Ritz hotels anywhere, Robjame: the doors.

They are extremely heavy, silent-closing doors with wonderful hardware and quality. It's like spending the weekend at my mother's. Of course, the marble bathrooms, lovely decor and fabulous resort area or city locations are great, too. But for me, the entire Ritz experience is epitomized by the doors.

Yes, I think you read the post wrong.
I totally understand what the OP was asking. And I answered that we all have our realities.

I think that however people spend their money is entirely up to them. I just think that what perhaps bothers others is that when those who have more options may not understand why others have less options. Sort of the whole notion of the bootstrap mentality.

I have friends from higher and lower incomes. In general, I just appreciate those that are aware of all realities of the world...and who have not closed themselves off from other realities.
I do not judge the rich. I am also aware that to other people, I am doing very good economically and I am sooo thankful for the fact that I can buy a latte when I want to and sometimes treat myself to nice cosmetics and things. I realize that there are people in our country and our world who go to sleep hungry on a constant basis.

I think that many people who come from certain beginings may be shocked at certain amounts of excess. But I am aware that the coffee I have gotten used to in the morning is a definate excess in the eyes of others.

So, it is not a judgement on the rich per se....it is moreso a disdain for those that do not understand that there are realities different from their own.

Just my two cents.

Ps--- people can be closeminded to other realities and be from low or middle or high incomes.

So again, I do not dislike the rich.
