Why do Fodorites seem so rude to each other on this website?

What fun! I needed the chuckle because if I trip over one more box or listen to one more Queen put ten s's at the end of the word "fabulousssssssssssssss"...
Of course, my favorite line: <i>"I believe he/she meant that "most" Fodorites are snobs"</i>
Honey, there's only ONE snob here...well, two, if you include my former username. The rest are pretenders.
ps Love that Marilyn. She always makes me smile.

Hi, I've always found this forum to be helpful and useful, although I admit that I'm usually apprehensive when asking a question.
I haven't had rude replies before, though; everyone has been helpful and I've had great tips and advice.
But I have also read many cutting responses to questions regarded as stupid or asked too frequently.
To be fair, the search function doesn't always work well, and I, too have had difficulty finding information posted previously.
Also, what may seem obvious to those familiar with the area, could be a total mystery to first-timers.
Being opinionated is one thing - and good fun to read - but being dismissive is intimidating.
Still, I won't stop reading here, coz the forum is really one of the best I've seen for travel advice!

This is a good lesson in advanced trolling:
>>>>
This is my first post, but I've been reading Travel Talk for a while now.
>>>>
immediately address the fact that this is your first post to save others from pointing this out and calling you a troll. get this issue out of the way immediately. if one posts the "discovery" of your newbie status, everyone else will jump on the troll bandwagon and the post will be blown.
>>>>>>
I travel quite a bit and spend the most time reading the posts under Italy.
>>>>>>
everyone loves italy. disarm them with your common interest.
>>>>>>
I was just reading a thread that is 5 years old that someone resurrected a few days ago, and a number of people bashed her for digging up such an old post.
>>>>>>
casually bring up a particularly volitile exchange in your example. an exchange that involved particularly "bickering" people. they'll surely jump into your troll thread.
>>>>>>
Then there's another thread posted by a young woman asking how she could have gained 5 lbs on her last trip. Two respondents literally got into an argument within the thread;
>>>>>>
another volitile thread as an example...that'll hook 'em in and turn this thread into a fiasco.
>>>>>
I'll stick to TripAdvisor from now on.
>>>>>
drop the bombs and then claim yourself to be above the explosions and bickering that will follow. A troll would stick around but you are out of here.
brilliant trolling stikkyB. people even mention the trolls in this thread...but almost no accusation in your direction.

I don't find people unduly rude here.
Anyway, what's it got to do with you, you ugly pig?
Oh - did anyone mention that sarcasm and humour don't always translate well on the web?
(Just in case someone, somewhere, thinks I am being serious).

Wonderful! Often being considered 'rude' is simply a result of language misunderstandings. Posters may have limited English skills. Posing an 'exact' question is difficult. Answering a question is the same. Yesterday I spent time trying to explain the word, live, and the way to pronounce it with an eager student. Some information is timeless. Some information is shortly out-of-date. Easy tests: Ask questions three ways. Copare answers. Try an English/Other Language dictionary. Look up an English word and note its foreign construction. Then look up that foreign word. Does the entry give the same meaning to that word as the English entry? In short, "What does this posting really ask?"

Marilyn -- we're going to London the weekend of September 15-17, arriving in Paris the 18th, and staying for the week of the 18th-25th. If you're going to be there, there's going to be a gtg of Fodorites there that week...we'd love to see you!

Stikky, an honest guestion: Do you think it is only possible to be rude if you are responding to someone else -- in other words, no one who posts a question or comment can be the problem, only those who react to it?
A comment: "rude" is a word that has become so quickly used that -- as others have already pointed out -- it does sometimes mean nothing more than disagreeing with something/something or doing/saying something someone else just doesn't like. The extreme example of how the word "rude" has been misused is that gorrawful JarJar Binks character in the worst (IMHO) of the Star Wars movies with his never-ending "how WOOOD!" in situations that had nothing to do with manners.
Fodorites can disagree sometimes, can be disagreeable sometimes, and can indeed be rude sometimes -- meaning crudely impolite.
But is an argument, by its very nature, impolite? I think that's a cultural decision, and some people think an argument is either just good, attention-getting fun -- and they provoke one just to bait other Fodorites they don't like -- or else their right as Americans to set other people straight. There are plenty of provocative Fodorites here, and some have already posted on this thread.
But there are others who find any whiff of disagreement proof positive that someone's being rude. StikkyB, you might be leaning more toward the latter, and you can certainly tell from other posts who tends the other way.
You'll find both here, and sometimes you have to develop a thick skin. Consider it similar to walking down a street in an unfamiliar town: keep your eyes open, step over things you don't like, take in whatever interests you, and remember every town -- including Fodorcity -- has its share of nice people. kooks, ranting fools, and the occasional travel agent!

Kids, I've told you time and time again: it's not a game unless everyone is having fun. Lolly, you cut your brother down from that tree RIGHT NOW! Buster, PUT. DOWN. THE. RAKE. And StikkyB, stop poking that stick in the hornets' nest!

"Can't we all just get along?" - Rodney King.
No, we can't. Usually we're civil, sometimes weapons are used (and it does look like the pen is mightier than the sword here).
Maybe I was rude in some of my responses, maybe you were seeking out rudeness.
I don't get into fashion questions because I'll respond "but I got it on SALE at Ross." So, Jules, please stay away from the Ross clearance rack, that's mine.

jules, we'll arrive in Paris the evening of Sept 22, departing the 29th. When is the GTG and where? I thought I read about it on another thread, but that we wouldn't be in Paris when it was happening. Email me directly at my hotmail account. Thanks!
