I simply cannot believe this post would receive so many responses.I am 73 years old and a Canadian who has always respected Americans and their presidents. I cried when Roosevelt died and Kennedy as well. In fact most Canadians felt the same way about all U.S preidents until George W Bush became the so called world leader. The last poll showed only 26% of Canadians approved of this dictator and that there is not one country left in the world who still respects Americans. He has done irreparable damage to the American people. Bye the way Canada lost 60,000 men in WW2 and the U.S.A thinks they have made a big sacrifice in Iraq!!!

That's rich coming from a Canadian. In American, representatives get to vote anyway they want. In Canada, with a parliamentary system, the MP's have to vote with the party, so a majority government IS a true dictatorship. Worse, you can have a majority government with as low a 43-44% of the vote.
And if an American dared expresse your opinion, or any opinion for that matter, about Canadian politics, he'd be told to shut up and mind his own business. Well, it works both ways, buster.

And you're saying that the Electoral College system in the US is really democratic way of electing a President??

That's rich! In America, sorry the USA, you don't even need to win the most votes to be President - Bush V Gore!!! How's that for Democracy!

No, the Electoral College system is not the most democratic system to elect a President. It is just the fairest system in a huge country with vast regional differences. It also helps to reduce the possibility of tyranny by the majority.
Freedom and hope for minority views is more important than democracy. A democracy can be the worst form of tyranny.

I always get called that by foreigners and assumed it was just their way of saying I was from the USA. Your ancestors named us. It is somewhat amusing that you assume we named ourselves. Since the colonization of the continent, we have alwys been called Americans after our ancestors had the fortitude to jump the pond or were already here as in my Native American ancestors. Other countries were formed and took more easily shortened names. We never lost that primary association with the continent because of the size of our country and the location of the early colonies. It is hard to shorten United States of America to something like Canadian, Mexican or Spaniard. It is like Russian v. Soviet, British v. United Kingdon, tomato v. tomato. If you can think of a name to shorten us to, it might be too late since we are called that worldwide. I travel overseas frequently and always say I am from the U.S. and always hear "American". Look at your old texts and see what you called us back then and whether they lumped Canada in as wll. Hey--by the way--what was the deal with the terrorists still harboring hatred against Spain for the ages the Inquisition---I understand there was a mention of it in the missive taking responsibility for the Madrid bombings. I guess some countries can never shake their rep with some people who assume they have done some great evil but maybe do not have their facts straight in an "overwhelming way".

And of course--not to forget African-Americans--most of their ancestors were brought to the U.S. by force. What is the deal there? African Americans--I guess that must puzzle you also because they have "appropriated" as you say two entire continents.

The noun "unitedstatian" does not exist. Someone from the United States of America is referred to as an "American". This isn't just in the English language, because in French, for example, it is "americain".
There are Americans who refer to their country as America, but generally I've found that most say "the U.S." or even "The States". I've lived in Europe and have found more Europeans calling my country "America" than actual Americans.
An Argentinian can be referred to as a "South American" and a Canadian or an American can be referred to as a "North American". We often use "Central American" to refer to someone from Costa Rica, for example. You can't call a Canadian "American" b/c this isn't correct in just the same way you can't call an American "Canadian."

THE CANADIANS BRAG about there socialist medical system thats why when there really sick they cross the boarder for care. They also don't have a serious militia who is going to attack them with there uncles just south, that goes just about for any nation that needs us.If I was President I would go back to isolationism Wilsons era 1920's let everyone protect themselves we would see how long that would worK!!!!!

lilminkey, Why don't you start your isolationist policy now, and stop boring the list with your little rants.
You are entitled to any political views you wish, but surely they are inappropriate to this thread about the semantics of naming a Country and its citizens.

How one is referred to abroad whe they hail from a particular country is arguably a travel question. The most hilarious thing about this thread is the continued presence of the thread police who complain about its longevity and then continue to read it and post dead horse replies about the fact it is still going so it gets bumped up and someone else reads it and adds their two cents. I am sure they are wondering why someone doesn't just listen to them and shut-up already so they don't have to keep reading and posting. Tee Hee
