Who has the best Black Sea beaches

I'll be in both Romania and Bulgaria and I only have time to travel to the beaches of 1 country--which one is the best?

Beaches are the same, but Bulgaria has more developed tourism infrastructure. It has been a popular beach destination for years already while Romania is just getting started.

I can recommend Sunnybeach near Bourgas, have been many times and it never disappoints.

I would definitely recommend the Bulgarian Black Sea coast beaches... Specifically, go for the beaches to the South of Burgas. My preference is for Sozopol -- the town itself is beautiful and the beaches are less crowded, and very nice. You could go further South, but you would end up in less developed areas (which could be good based on your access to a car and what type of a holiday you are looking for). Here is a link to some info on Bulgaria on my blog:

Romania's strip of seaside resorts are actually long-established. But the facilities were set up under Communism, and both the buildings and the attitude of the staff reflected the contempt the rulers felt for the poor sods they lorded it over.

There have been desultory attempts to redevelop the resorts. As far as I'm aware, none have got off the ground, and the strip still seems to be as dismal a relic of life before 1989 as it's been for the past 20 years.

Unless anyone's been there very recently?

I'd agree with Flanner on the current state of Romania's Black Sea beaches vs. Bulgaria's...the stretch between Varna and south of Burgas has several appealing places, and I third the suggestion on Sozopol. We were first there in the early 80's and it was very quiet and nowhere near as developed as my most recent visit three years ago. Go Bulgarian, mcaputo...

I've never been to Golden Sands. But Sunny Beach has a lot to offer. A decent veriety of restaurents, fun night life, lots of hotels to choose from. Great place to relax and have a good time.

I agree: It's the Bulgarian Black Sea shores that are best. Sozopol, Nezebar (sp?), Sunny Beach...all wonderful towns with beaches and facilities that are vast improvements over Romania's. Better hurry, though: Americans have 'discovered' Bulgaria.
