which islands?

My husband and I are planning a seven day break in the greek isles in July. Which islands do you recommend? We mainly want pleasant beaches, peace and quiet and to see typical unmodernised Greek scenery.

Hi
why not try the Pelion(not the Pelopennese) peninsular. the region is described as Alps with beaches. There are not many direct flights. the nearest airport is Volos which is a one hour drive away. Failing that fly to Athens and its a 5-6 hour drive. the Pelion reminds me of the Greek isles as they were in the 70's. To get an idea look at http://www.tapestryholidays.com/dest...ece/portfolio/

Fiskardo in Cephalonia is wonderful but since Captain Corelli's mandolin quite busy in the main season. Aegina/Hydra/Spetses are lovely except for July and August. Symi is fab but hard to reach. Mykonos out of season is wonderful

Hi
since recommending the fabulous Tapestry holidays they have gone into liquidation but GREAT news, they have a new backer and are up and running again so look at
http://www.tapestryholidays.com/contact_us

For the moment their programme is limited to South west Turkey and Crete but they are planning on expanding into Cephalonia in the next few weeks and then who knows! Great to hear some good news particularly after the demise of the other fabulous Greek specialist Laskarina holidays. In case you are wondering...I don't work for them -just travelled with them many times!
best wishes
Anne

Amorgos comes to my mind but not the easiest island to reach from Naxos. You can go into the mountains of Crete and see some small remote villages if you rent a car.

Since you have 3 desires that are hard to fill as the High Season starts, I second the motion for Crete ... rent a car and you can find 'unmodernised' Greek towns/villages and -- if you pick and choose -- some less crowded beaches, perhaps on the far west coast.
