Don't know if anyone cares about the fine print, but Monaco is actually not a country, it is a principality.

I looked up prinicpality and here's the definition:<BR><BR>the territory or jurisdiction of a prince : the country that gives title to a prince<BR><BR>So can't a country be a principality? Or, if not, what country is Monaco the principality of? Liechtenstein is also a principality.

Vita:<BR>I do know that Lichtenstein has a capital, Vaduz. I'm quite certain principalities do not have capitals.<BR>Interesting questions. I certainly gave it for granted that Lichtenstein was the smallest country.

Principalities are countries, just like kingdoms are countries. Just like republics are countries. It's just a description of their form of government.<BR><BR>Has anyone heard of the Knights of Malta? They issue passports and licencse plates, have diplomatic representation in a few countries, and have other sovereign attributes, but don't have any territory except for a big palace in Rome. I guess they would be the smallest, but it depends on how country is defined.

Principalities certainly have capitals. They're just countries with a Prince as head of state.

Monaco is the capital of Monaco. I consider that a country as it has parties, elections, legislature, judicial, etc. I don't consider the Vatican a country, don't know what they consider themselves as they don't do a lot of the things countries do, Italy does it for them (like they don't have jails or trials, do they?). I don't know why they exist as an indep. city-state or what purpose that serves today, but think it's for historical reasons having to do with constant power struggles between them and other Italian govt. Not many civil rights as you can't vote if you're a woman, nor hold office.

How about Indian reservations in the U.S.? Their license plates have "Soveriegn Nation" on them.
