Great thread. Now I know I'll be taking my MBNA card to Europe this summer (that is, after making a few phone calls to ensure info is still up to date).

To "?": My MBNA card automatically turns my miles/points earned over to American on a monthly basis, so I recieve my miles w/o doing a thing. However, you're right, it's not one mile per $ spent, but rather a points per $ system.
Just cancel one
Or agree to one of those balance transfer deals at 0%
And you will receive EVERYBODY's best offer. Truly.
Even if you normally pay off each month, just send half that once or twice, wait for the conversion offers to start rolling in, and just compare the disclosure sheets.
Please report back if you have as much success with this as I did!
I just got a "Motley Fool" Visa, ordered from the motleyfool.com website. No annual fee. It is with MBNA so there is only the 1% that Visa charges, no additional bank charges. This card gives you 1% back on all purchases at the end of the year, so you come out even on your international purchases, and ahead on the rest.
