We spent six nights in Paris, four in Avignon, two in Lyon, then headed to Italy. Worked well for us, and Avignon is a lovely small town.

I too was going to suggest Turkey. Hiking, beaches, ruins for walking through, the incredible scenery and places to see in Cappadocia, a gullet boat tour possible, kayaking, and Istanbul is both fabulous and exotic.

How about doing a multi-day biking trip in the Loire Valley? Great variety of things to see and do while you are biking--the chateaus, vineyards, gardens, charming towns that are walkable.

And a chateau looks much like another chateau, as much as a hill looks like another hill. Not sure it is a good idea.
