no sandles in Venice?

Yesterday I heard from some people who were leaving for Italy, that there is some fungus you can pick up on your feet in Venice if you wear sandles. Has anyone heard of this?
Apparently they had talked to someone who got it and it took several weeks to get rid of it once they got back to the states.
Could this be from mold ....or?
This must be something new. We were in Venice in Sept. 1999, everyone, including us were wearing sandals, did not hear of any problems. It had rained before we got there but had beautiful sunshine while we were there.
I guess alot would depend on whether it was dry where you are walking.

Hmm, this sounds a bit like the dreaded Blarney Stone lurghi. I've never heard of the fearsome Venician Foot-rot.
Perhaps the friend just caught a form of athlete's foot.
Many Italian hotels provide slippers. I always wear them in the bathroom, but can't see how you could catch anything in the street.

Sydney,
I'm pretty skeptical. I traveled to Venice for a long weekend with a number of other graduate students & we were virtually all in sandals in public at some point & none of us ever contracted anything like the condition you described. Go to Venice in the footwear of your choice & have a delightful time!
Kathy
