Which 2? Viterbo vs Montefiascone vs Orvieto vs Arezzo
Aloha!
I'll be flying into Rome (FCO) and am looking for recommendations on which 2 of these 4 towns I should stop at on my way north to Vicenza. I have 8 days to split between 2 of the locations, am traveling solo and am reliant on trains and buses. I've been to Italy several times and have visited the typical "bucket list" locations. All 4 of these places look wonderful, thus I need some help choosing where to spend my time! Tell me about experiences in these locations and how you would split up 8 days.
Thanks
K

I would recommend Orvieto in Umbria and Arezzo in Tuscany. You can catch a train from FCO to Orvieto via Rome. The fastest trains takes just over 2 hours. Then the direct train from Orvieto to Arezzo is a little more than an hour. I really like Orvieto. The cathedral is spectacular from the outside and interesting inside, plus there are a good range of shops, bars and restaurants. You can also do an underground tour. Regarding time in each why not split your time between the two bearing in mind that four night usually translates into 3 days of activity.
I am sure you will enjoy wandering around Arezzo. If you are there on the first Sunday of the month and the Saturday before, there is a good antique street market in the piazza San Francesco,Piazza Grande and the Logge Vasari. I would recommend going to Cortona for the day by train. It is a charming town and there is an excellent Etruscan museum to explore.

I agree with uktravelover: Orvieto and Arezzo would make a nice combo (especially if you like frescoes). I like Viterbo too, but love Orvieto and Arezzo. I haven't been to Montefiascone, though.

I also would choose Orvieto and Arezzo. I've never been to Montefiascone, but I've been to the other three, multiple times to Arezzo and Orvieto. Viterbo has a nice medieval center, but nothing spectacular.
