Chris,
The La Terraza rooftop restaurant at the Hassler Hotel above the Spanish Steps. Extremely romantic and safe from the crowds. The restaurant will help you out. They will prepare a cake or do something magical for you!! A sure thing. Have Fun!!!
Rent the movie from the 50s..."Three Coins in a Fountain"...has a lot of Trevi fountain, throwing a coin in and returning to Rome stuff in it. We threw one in the fountain in 1971 and finally did it again in 1998. The area is crowded, but you should be able to find a time early or late at night. Plus, they cleaned the thing a few years ago and it really looked nice.

I also like the Top of St Peter's site. You will be winded when you finally make it to the top, but the view is fantastic.

Pickpockets are everywhere in Rome. If you see a new mother nursing a baby and asking for a handout, you have met a pickpocket. This is a very common ploy and works very well for the pickpockets to get close to you and clean you out.

Hi everyone!
Well we just got back from Rome sunday morning. I wanted to thank you all for the great ideas. I ended up propsing at the top of the Spanish Steps. It was perfect. We had been there a few times in the first 4 days of our trip but didnt realize we could go into the church at the top until the the day before valentines. After we came out of the church we sat on a little ledge next to the doors. It was just about sunset and I'd been waiting everyday to ask her to marry me but there where always too many people or the time just didnt seem right. This just happened to be the perfect time and place.
the rest of our trip went great also. We didnt run into any of the pick pockets or "gypsies" that I heard so much about. a couple of street beggers was all. We saw everything on our list except the Pantheon. For one reason or another we just never made it there. We didnt take any taxis or buses anywhere, we walked to everything. I think I got my workout for the rest of the month. Its always longer than it looks on the maps!
Anyways, thanks! We had a GREAT time in Rome! And by the way, she did say yes

chris

Thanks, Chris; very nice of you to report back. I think you made an excellent choice (and, of course, she did too :~) ; sunset over Rome from that vantage point is beautiful.

Glad you had a great time in Rome. Quite a wonderful city, isn't it?
