Where wouldn't you travel to?
Having calmed down from reading people saying "don't travel to any Muslim country" - in the Malayan area. I was wondering where we just would not go at the moment. Paranoia VS research & common sense.

Not a Troll post or designed to insite - i've even put my email address to it.

Oh, and i'm off to KL (breaking the trip from UK-Australia) and to Israel both before the end of April...

I wouldn't go to Peru unless I was part of a tour group, because it is known for its muggers and gypsies -- especially on the train to Machu Pichu. I understand that many tourists have gone there but not returned with photographs because of their cameras being stolen on the train. Actually, this is the only country where my world-traveling parents were mugged -- and it was directly outside of the hotel in Lima. Didn't get any money from my Dad, as he was wearing a money belt -- only got his bananas and postcards. Now that I think about it, this is the only destination that my parents went to where I didn't get a postcard. By the way, my parents were warned about the robberies on the train to Machu Pichu, so they didn't bother to bring a camera there.

Obviously, I wouldn't go to Afghanistan, and probably wouldn't go there in 20 years after it is rebuilt. With all the money that is being planned to rebuild the country, it will most likely look like any other contemporary city. However, can you imagine staying in 4 star hotels that were once caves -- now, that just might be interesting.

Leslie et al

Afghanistan is on my shortlist of places to miss at the moment too. Not sure about visiting Rwanda, Zimbabwe or Columbia either.

As to rebuilt cities, I returned from Warsaw on Weds and it was very interesting. Lets see about Kabul in 5 years or so.

Money belt is a good idea. I've also taken a spare wallet with a little local currency and sterling, added an out of date card or two as well. Never needed it, but i'd rather do it and not need it...

~~ Nige ~~

ciao nigel

i wouldn't go to china, or only if they let there hands from tibet (formerly lived by tibetan people) and let it be a free country again. dito not to tibet, only if chinese are gone. def. not to iran, irak, yemen, afghanistan and the whole corner above it, no kashmir. but not because these are muslim countries, more because a woman can't be safe there. then no places where huge spiders run around like pets.

would def. go back to radjastan and nepal. and more or less every city i visited till today. o.k. not istanbul. but the rest is o.k.

cool thread nigel!

tanti saluti

christina

My wife love to travel and have been all over western Europe, Hong Kong, all over the US, many parts of Canada, the Carribean, and Mexico. We are open minded but there places that just hold no interest for us. We have no desire to travel to any part of the African continent, do not want to visit any part of the middle East, have no need to see Turkey, and really no wishes to ever see India. That said, we are open to most other parts of the world.

To each his/her own. You asked where we would not travel and that is it. For some these would be valid destinations, but for us they are not even on our "someday" list but they are on out "never, never" list.

Although not religious myself, I wouldn't visit a country that has a state religion, has mutawa (religious police), and prohibits the public practice of any other religion. I also wouldn't visit a country where, according to many people, women's lives are among the most restricted in the world (for example, they are forbidden from being in public unless accompanied by a male relative.)

Those are two reasons why I would not visit Saudi Arabia.

"The Veiled Life of Saudi Women"
http://www.library.cornell.edu/colld...t/saudwmnx.htm

I agree with Capo!
Also-I would like to go to Nepal and India, but when the troubles they are having are solved. I have wondered what it would be like to be on a houseboat in Kashmir and travel around that region. My husband is lucky enough to have been able to do that when he was younger and that area was safer.Maybe-someday~

I have traveled to Germany once. Enjoyed the people and the country but have read on this board that they are racist. I married into a German family here in the States and have never witnessed this. Is what I read here in this forum true of the German people in Europe? If so, then it will deminish my desire to return.

Any place where the only thing to do was lay on the beach. I have never been a beach person, and I have a great deal of difficulty comprehending the attraction.

Otherwise, the rest of the world is interesting to me. There are varying degrees of that interest, and I would avoid dangerous sections of cities or countries, but I would not rule any city or country out. A lot of people would think that where I live is not interesting... you lose! I try to be open minded.

BTW, the poster who said they had no interest in Turkey should reconsider. I think Istanbul is the best city in the world. My favourite used to be Rome. It all depends on your experience, but I have been to London, Paris, NYC, Venice, Rome, among others, and Istanbul is safer, cleaner, more beautiful, and has the kindest people.

Ark, I work with a number of Moroccans in Orlando, and they have encouraged me to visit their country; go for it.

Now, to answer the question--- Obvious choice would be NOT going to the Middle East now, specifically Afg., Pak, Iran, Iraq, Yemen... I have also worked with a Colombian from Bogota, and after hearing stories and reading about the kidnappings and guerrillas in the area [not gorillas] I'd have to hold off on going there unless accompanied by a native.

The other place[s] I have no interest in visiting is a great number of places right here in N. America-- The midwest US and southward, the 'heartland' plains, and much of Canada... The exception being the Rocky Mountain region from Utah up through Vancouver [wouls love to visit there, just to see its beauty]. Hope that doesn't sound dumb or ignorant or anything like that, because it isn't meant that way, it's just that I'd so much rather be other places than visit the parts of 'my neighborhood'-- Never been excited to travel to Nebraska, or Kentucky, or Alabama, or Winnipeg, etc. [Probably great places, but just not big for tourism].

I guess there's just always been an allure to going to 'different' places, even if it's as uneventful as the Siberian plains.
