Where to stay our last night in Iceland
Hi everyone - This is another Iceland itinerary question, although it's pretty focused.
I have a rough plan for our trip to Iceland from June 19 (flight from NYC) to June 28 (5 pm departure from Reykjavik). The basic plan is:
June 20-25 (check-out): Based in Reyjavik (staying at the Hilton on points to save $)
June 25-28 (check-out): Basing ourselves in Stykkishólmur to explore the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. (I have been calling it the Snuffles Peninsula when discussing it with my husband because the spelling knocks me for a loop. I know it's not called that - just seems like a handy shorthand.)
June 28 - Nothing fixed yet, although I'm holding another one-night reservation back at the Hilton.
Our planned activities include a custom photo day tour (one or two days) prior to June 25. We're very keen photographers and that's one of the principal reasons for the trip. I think that we'll explore the South, Golden Circle etc - the easier to organize/find parts on our own and the more exotic bits with a guide. And of course we'll explore Reykjavik itself (probably on the first day or so). We're planning to rent a car, but probably won't pick it up until mid-afternoon on Monday (and then have it for a week, Monday-Monday).
We also are planning to run the midnight Half Marathon (starts late evening on June 23rd).
So, the essential question is - where should we stay and explore on our way back from the "Snuffles" Peninsula? I'm looking for a recommendation for an interesting area to explore with our cameras and nice lodging. I've noted that many places are already booking up because it's midsummer. It doesn't have to be on a direct route back from Stykkishólmur to Reykjavik, but it would seem to make sense that it would be in some area to the north of Reykjavik (and possibly the interior).
Thanks

It's south of Reykjavik, and probably a bit on the silly side, but why not the Viking Fishing Village? http://fjorukrain.is/fjaran-valholl-vikingana/
We'll be spending our last night there in July

Head east from Borganes towards Husafell. Spectacular scenery, including Hraunfoss, a waterfall that flows out of lava rocks. (google it, you´ll see what I mean!) plus Reykholt, the historical home of Snorri Sturlason, Iceland´s famous medieval author.
Check out this, Reykholt and Hraunfoss both on the list.
