I love the beach, wish to explore a beach, the museum - places of Goddesses - meet local people,
I don't think I have enough time to see more than the Chania area - though would like to tour the island from a boat tour - that's why the hike/boat tour sounded very interesting to me. I am traveling alone, though do have a friend who lives there.
thank you

I suggest the Doma, which is not right downtown in Chania, but easily walkable from the downtown area. http://www.hotel-doma.gr/en/ It has its own restaurant.
I think you're referring to the hike of the gorge of Samaria. Definitely do it! It's one of my favorite travel experiences of all time. In our case, we took a cab to the starting point, then we hiked most of the day. You end up at a little town right on the water, and take a boat to another town where you can get a bus back to Chania. I really can't recommend it highly enough; in fact, a friend once talked of starting a club of everyone she knew who had hiked the gorge.
Be aware, though, that the hike is mostly downhill. Our legs ached for several days afterward whenever we tried to walk upstairs, or generally in an up direction.
You are so lucky to be going to Crete. Enjoy it!

I'm tempted to suggest you should try one of the small places at Tavronitis or Stavros on the Akrotiri. Chania has its town beach, but.....
To the west of Chania itself, there's a long strip of tourism development- not as god-awaful as the area round Malia and Heronissos, but not that top either.
Chania itself is a really nice town, but if you wanted to be out of the town and maybe just visit one day, I'd recommend Paleochora, which has beaches galore and the south west ferries all call in. You can the Samaria trip from there by tour or public bus, as easily as you can from Chania.

Here are two of my favorite hotels in Chania, the first is in Stavros, Akrotiri and the second is in Gerani. They are both near a beach.

Check them out. You can find panoramic pictures of the hotels, the rooms, the pools and the view, in order to make your choise easier!

mmm. Well Gerani is exactly where I wouldn't go. Sorry Katerina, the hotel may be nice but the strip is just badly overdone.
The Aegean Palalce looks bigger than I'd be thrilled with.
You'll find some options here:-

I can't find the two places we stayed- through Simply Crete- but I'd strongly suggest you look at apartments as well as hotels
