Where to stay in Vannes?

Any specific suggestions for a good place to stay in Vannes? (Other than within the walls!) Would prefer to rent, but everything more modern than I'd like. There's two of us but we like having our own rooms.

How long do you want to rent???? We stay in Gites, which usually rent from Sat to Sat. Here is where we stayed within 15 mins from Vannes last year.

Like Stu, we stayed outside of Vannes, 9 km. from the city (about 15 min by car) but only for 4 nights, at a B&B, Le Clos du Gusquel, with just 3 rooms and a pool (much appreciated during the heat wave!)

We didn't pursue an apartment rental in Vannes. If we had wanted an apartment or suite in town, we might have booked Une Suite a Vannes, right at the port.

We stopped for a drink at the Best Western Plus le Roof facing the public beach, but we weren't really impressed.

Stu's Brittany itinerary was enormously helpful in planning our 16-night trip. I highly recommend it! Thanks so much for your generosity, Stu. We followed it closely and were so enriched by doing so!

I just posted info to Fodors about my latest Brittany & Normandy itinerary. See my earlier post.

I stayed at theInter-Hotel Manche Ocean, which still gets decent (not great) reviews. I thought the location very good for my purposes, but it wasn't a perfect place, and it's been years since I was there, so you should check more recent reviews.

Not sure what you mean by having your own rooms. Do you mean a hotel room each or that you want an apartment? Last year we stayed in a budget priced hotel in the centre of Vannes (on the main shopping street) and although the room was small, it had plenty of character and we liked it. Breakfast was an optional extra, served in the dining room. Our room looked out on to the historic ramparts at the back. By the way, if you like markets, the one at Vannes was really good.

Hotel ** in the heart of Vannes' town centre in southern Brittany - Hotel Le Bretagne

My daughter, two grandchildren, and I stayed at an Airbnb in the St.-Patern area, which is really older than the area within the walls. We were very close to the remparts; great location! It had only 1 bedroom, but there was a sofa bed in the living area.

Still looking!

Thanks for all the suggestions!

To clarify, my friend and I prefer that we each have our own bedroom. Makes it pricey for hotels and we actually prefer rentals. Everything I have seen so far in Vannes itself has been pretty charmless. (Yes, we also like charm!)

Stu- your itineraries have been so helpful. Thank you. I contacted the gite owner on the Rance where you stayed because it sounded perfect. M. Wulf was very kind and agreed to a 5 night rental for us when the time comes. Very happy! So we are set for our northern-ish base and in a character cottage too!

i did see a rental in Auray. An apartment in a manor house in the center. Parking is not adjacent but is included. Glowing reviews online. From this location I think we could spend a day in Vannes, tour the Gulf, visit Pont Aven, Carnac, Concarneau. Does this location sound do able? I like the idea of staying in a cottage AND a manor house. A taste of two worlds. Thoughts?
