Where to stay in Madrid?

My husband and I and our two boys (ages 7 and 5) are going to Spain for a month in November. Our first week is in Madrid and we are struggling with doubles, triples, quads etc... We also saw a loft apartment at Plaza Mayor. Any suggestions on hotel set ups?

Well, it depends on so many things, as your budget, what are you planning to do in Madrid, etc.
Refine a little, please.

Good point! One week and 80-120 euros/night. We have children so we like green spaces/parks and city centers/plazas to spend evenings enjoying the food and culture of the city - not big on cathedrals and museums because of the kids.

I usually move around the Barrio de Salamanca. I know the Bauza hotel and the Convencion (Madrid, and not the Barajas one) hotel, both near the Retiro park. I do not like the Plaza Mayor or Gran Via places, but that is my particular choice. The problem is that many hotels at the Salamanca barrio are for executives and businessmen, so are pricey on weekdays. You can check the NH Lagasca or NH Alcala or the Hesperia Hermosilla. Other hotels near el Prado-Retiro-Botanical gardens-Thyssen are NH Nacional, Sanvy and Gran Hotel Canarias. Children may also be a problem, usually are not permitted TWO children in the double room with their parents (only one). Perhaps you can find a suite for the two of you at a good price, as you are staying a whole week. Late this month I'll be in Madrid and if I have time shall take a look. In any case, post your choices, and we'll advise.

Try the Lope de Vega, right near the Prado. I believe it's in your price range and they are kid-friendly.

What is you rprice range? We stayed in a quad at the Best Western Carlos V and were pleased with everything. It's very close to Plaza Mayor.

Sorry, I just noticed your 2nd post wehre you state price range. I think BW Carlos V will be more than that.

In general, you need a quad, anything smaller, will not have enough beds. The room type is based on the sleeping arrangement.

There is activity on the Plaza Mayor until unbelievable hours of the night (or early morning). I would think an apartment there would be very, very noisy.

We ended up staying at Hotel Regente right at the Gran Via and really enjoyed it. We had a quad for 127 euros/night. It is a bit noisy as you would expect but no one seemed to mind as it was just background noise. The hotel is clean and the room was spacious. The most attractive thing was how convenient it was to everything. Anyone traveling with children - we have a great deal of info on activities for kids.

I often use the Best Western Chain (actually loosely affiliated hotels) when traveling in Europe on a budget. I'd NEVER stay in one in the U.S., but you'd be surprised in Europe. I've stayed twice in or near the Plaza del Sol in BW for a surprisingly reasonably price. With kids you have to be on a budget. Unfortunately, like most other cities in Europe, you will find the 'usual' U.S. burger chains, though the prices are higher. May work for you but I avoid them like the plague.
