I'd say the "heart of London". That will make it a lot easier for your girls to be independent, and it will be so much more convenient. I have stayed in a bunch of places in London, and on our last trip we stayed near Covent Garden, and it was *so* convenient.

I'm adding my two cents a bit late, I know, but you might also check the Holiday Inn Kensington and the Jury's Kensington Hotels. When I was planning our family trip two years ago, they were both pretty reasonable. We ended up at the Jury's and were happy with our choice. (We were looking for one room that could accommodate the four of us and e-mailed Jury's directly as such a room wasn't on their website.)

Weve done apartments and budget hotels (as well as luxury hotels) for London stays, and an apartment wins every time. YOu have laundry facilities you dont have to pay an arm and a leg for, the ability to eat without paying the high London prices for every single meal, you can enjoy the experience of shopping in the stores and buying local foods (great supermarkets in London) you will have a living room or lounge to sit around and tables and chairs instead of crouching on beds, etc.

That website is giving my pc the "twitches" so I can't look at the individual flats. Assuming the costs and amenities are about the same . . . .
Both locations are fine - - but if it were me I'd Choose Hertford Street. It is basically in the very center of London. It is a very posh neighborhood and walking distance to Green Park tube station which is one of the most useful since the Jubilee, Piccadilly and Victoria lines intersect there.
Do you want to be walking distance to Hyde Park, Buckingham Palace, and Fortnum & Mason (Hertford St) -- or to Regent's Park (Harley St)?

I would so try a time share, they are less than a hotel and include a kitchen which means you can save a few dollars if you don't mind cooking a few meals. London is not known for the food, anyway! No, I do not work for any timeshare companies, just my experience. We were in London and thought we had saved money by staying at a Comfort Inn in Kensington. It was a great area, but a lousy bed. We had been to Paris and arrived in London exhausted only to have a lousy bed. Spend a few dollars to have a nicer room, you will have a better experience. I wish you a fabulous time!

"<i>I would so try a time share</i>" Easier said than done. There are very few such properties in London and they are among the most booked up/traded for anywhere in the World.
It can take years to get into the one in Maida Vale - and that isn't the most central of locations.

I think you can't lose with either area. Several years ago, my parents lived about five or six blocks from the Regents' park location and it was lovely and convenient. Marylebore is the new hot, VERY posh area of London and the park is beautiful. That said, you can't go wrong with the Hyde Park area, either. Easy walk to everything. And walking is definitely the very best way to see London! My fiancée and I stayed in the Victoria Station area last spring and loved it, too. (The hotel wasn't that hot, but the location couldn't be beat!) I'd stay away from Bayswater and Paddington, bit "dodgy" compared to the other locations and full of old, dusty, dirty tourist "flop houses" for lack of a better word. Location is key; you will hardly be in your room!

If you haven't decided yet, i'd suggest athomeinlondon again, as did someone on a previous post. We booked a B and B with them for dates in July for an average of under $125/night, for 2 weeks, in Belgravia area, for room and private sitting room and use of the kitchen. You get a break on extended stays. We haven't been there yet, so i don't know yet if this is a good thing, but the office contact has been extremely helpful and pretty prompt about responses (and when i got antsy and called, extra helpful). So --another agency to consider--they only handle a few dozen B and B's.

Also a late response.. I've been traveling to London for 15 years and have stayed in many hotels. By far my favorite is the Baileys Millenium in Kensington. It is next to the Glouster Road Underground station. The hotel is beautiful, inexpensive and the rooms are large.
Booking on their website offers the best rates:

Seconding the idea of renting an apartment as well as the Hertford Street location. That is VERY central. Shepherd's Market is a fun area to visit. There's a good Turkish restaurant there, Sofra Mayfair.
We find the food in London very good. There's a tremendous selection of ethnic restaurants. But it's very expensive, so having a kitchen for breakfast and snacks is a money-saver. We bouught a lot of our meals at M&S prepared food outlets, not so cheap but great choices.
Pros of apartments: more seating area, separate rooms so somebody can sleep while somebody else watches TV, kitchen, washer and dryer.
Cons of apartments: with 2 girls you might want 2 bathrooms, which are rare in apartments, no concierge to get tickets, no desk to call a taxi.
Previous posters have recommended the County Hall Travelinn as inexpensive and good for families. Didn't see it mentioned in this thread.

wow - everyone is been so helpful! I think we have found 4 flats to choose from - avonmore road, blithfield street, redcliffe sqaure and earls court square - all around the kensington area. Of course my 2 teenage daughters still want a hotel, but I assured them we would find our way around town just fine!! I will check out the athomeinlondon.com and bailey's millenium too. Priceline is just too unsure right now, although at bidding for travel they are using kinington close, copthorne tara and olympia hilton. Hertford street still in the running! (

I am sorry to be a bit late coming to this thread. I have rented from London Guest Suites and got a very good bargain rate last March for a one bedroom flat. It also had a pull down king bed in the dining room, effectively giving us two private sleeping areas. There were also large sofas in the living room. It was about two blocks from Harrods in the direction of Hyde Park. Location was super.
This year I am renting from Farnum & Christ. Frankly all the arguments made by people in support of renting a flat convinced me and I am happy they did. My companions can sit up watching tv without disturbing me and I can get up at the crack of dawn and start coffee without disturbing them. Great experience.
