We are planning a trip to Italy for mid May 2012. We are hoping to stay on the Amalfi coast for 4 days, where would it be best to stay?

We are a couple, 50 years old. We like places walk ( not hike) nice restaurants and great views. We want a home base to visit Naples, Positano, Amalfi

We are planning to use train, bus and boat to visit the coast so we will not have a car

We are looking for an Inn or B& B. Should we stay in Naples, Sorrento, Amalfi, Positano or where?

I'm sure many will disagree but i happen to be a big fan of Sorrento. I don't think it gets its due respect.

A very nice town on its own. Nice walking, restaurants

Good transportation to Capri and Amalfi coast.

Check the boat schedule to make sure the season has started when you're there.

The bus ride to Positano is an adventure. We keep having a debate what the problem is. Some think it's the cliffs down from the road. I think it's the bus drivers who alternate between flooring the gas and slamming the brakes.

Getting to Sorrento from naples is very easy. The comuter train directly.

Given the places you'd live to see, I also think Sorrento makes sense. It's a plenty nice town with great transportation connections to the places you'd like to visit. You could also look at one of the small suburbs of Sorrento such as Sorrento Sant Agnello or Piano di Sorrento. I;m not positive I spelled them right. We stayed in Sorrento proper twice and in Sorrento Sant Agnello once. We ended up preferring S. S. Agnello. We stayed at Hotel Villa Garden which has lovely views and is about a 25 minute level walk to Sorrento's main square, Piazza Tasso

We were at Sharon House; and were very pleased.Really at the centre of Amalfi(a small town); with big(for Europe) rooms and good modern bathrooms.No views; but you will be inmersed all day long in the most beautiful landscapes,so,you really don't need a view from your room.

Returned yesterday from a week at Hotel Onda Verde near Priano. Memorable.

The Sorrento area definitely. It's central to what you want to see in terms of transportation and it has a more upscale feel compared to Naples... which I love by the way for its hustle and bustle and authentic vibe. But if you want to eat at a restaurant in the late evening and then take a stroll around town Sorrento will hit the spot.

OK, one more vote for Sorrento, especially for people who don't like climbing stairs/hills.

Sorrento. Easy walking, I see you dont like to "hike" and if youwalk down to the seafront in Sorento at Marina grande, there is alittle shuttle bus back up to the to of town. Stay in the center, nr Piazza Tasso or Sant Antoninio or the hisorical area..NT up in the hills or above Via dei Aranci

sorry... i meant a shuttle bus back to TOP from Marina Grande (easy walk down), and do NOT stay up in the hills above town center, for example, above via dei Aranci. Too much uphill walking, even tnough gradual
