Where to go in Burgundy

I would like some ideas about what towns to visit on our trip to Burgundy in May. We will be in Paris for three nights and then we will get a car and drive to Avallon for two nights, Beaune for 3 nights and Lyon for 3 nights.
I am especially interested in figuring out what to see when we leave Beaune for the Lyon area. What should we see on our way to Lyon and what towns should we travel to while we are staying there? Kathe

I would at least spend a day in Dijon. I suggest you get a copy of the Michelin Green Guide Burgundy to help you plan.

Don't miss Autun. It has a magnificent Gothic cathedral as well as a fine Roman theater still in use--and there's more. You should also try to work in the historic basilica of Vézelay, along with the Abbaye de Fontenay, still in very good shape. If time allows, visit the Renaissance château of Tanlay--very interesting stylistically.

I'm sending something to your e-mail address.

Hi Kathe,

Are you interested in wine?

You are on the Cote d'Or.

See http://www.wineeducation.com/regburg.html

Also click on the map.

I second the idea of visiting Dijon for a good part of a day. If you are interested in wine, let us know as this will influence how you should spend your time.

Kathe wrote me she will definitely visit Dijon, maybe that is why she wants to know what to visit next!
Thanks for your support anyway!

Tomorrow Georgiegirl will be in Dijon at this time (if there is no more strike!) and next Saturday we'll be meeting cchottel. A Dijon GTG at last! (sorry for highjacking your post Kathe!;-))

Peruges, which is unklike anywhere in Burgundy. It's an enchanting medieval fortified village.

Pérouges was used as the background in any number of films set in medieval France, and it's a charming village to visit. Not far from there is Bourg-en-Bresse, where there is an exceptional flamboyant Gothic church.

In Beaune, you visit first the Hotel Dieu, then a wine cave. Very close to the famous hospital is the Marche aux Vins. You go on yourself downstairs into a candle-lit cellar - complete with 1000-year-old coffins - and help yourself with dozens of different wines. Later you go up and land in the ruins of a former church, again with lots of wines to taste. It is very romantic and you have the chance to get completely drunk with formidable stuff.
