Where to go from Paris in January?

I need suggestions as I'll be staying in Paris for 7 days until January 27, then I have 6 days of travel before flying to Milan on 1st Feb. I was thinking to go South of France to a city of Provance. What is the best way to go there? What is the best route I should take? Should I take train then drive back or drive then take train back to Paris? As its winter, is it good to go to Provance or should I visit another city?

Take the train to Dijon and Lyon, splitting the time between the two cities. Or drive if you think you might want to see more. In that case, Sens, Auxerre, Dijon, Beaune, Lyon would make sense (not all towns deserve an overnight). I would go from Lyon directly to Milan.

Or you could spend a week in the Provence, starting with Avignon, Arles, Marseilles, Cannes, Nice. And then go directly to Milan.

Be aware that it will be positively freezing in places like Lyon, and train travel between that part of France and Italy is far from optimal.

If you go to the south of France, you find getting to Milan by train very time consuming.

Were it me, I would go to Belgium.

PS: I wouldn't pick a place contingent on driving. If you go to someplace like Lyon or Avignon, only rent a car if you see the weather is nice. One reason I would pick Belgium is because trains go most everywhere I would want to go in January. Plus, I like the food a great deal.

A quick check on the SNCF site shows that a train ride between Lyon and Milano takes about 6 hours with a transfer point in Chambéry or Torino(?).

Lyon is also known for its food.

What about Sicily? it should be warmer than just about anywhere else on the northern side of the med at that time of year. but really europe is your oyster if you are flying out of Paris and into Milan - eg North Africa, Turkey, southern Spain.

I think that in January I would pick all of those over central or even southern France.

unless you fancy a week's skiing???
