Where to go???

Where would you go for a mid-winter long weekend, with a mate (not a lover) if you had to choose from the following - and why?

Edinburgh, Copenhagen, Venice, Munich, Barcelona, Milan, Bilbao, Bologna, Malaga, Rome, Madrid, Faro, Lisbon?

I've spent 5 months in Rome, and loved Venice, going to Barcelona in October, didn't think much of Faro, so maybe one of the others...

Can only comment on places I have been to, but I guess my top choices would be either Edinburgh or Barcelona. Both have friendly locals, great sightseeing, vibrant nightlife and loads to do. Actually, on second thoughts I'd probably just say Edinburgh. As much as I love Barcelona, you have to admit that you do have to watch your back (pickpockets and so forth). Edinburgh is just fun - no worries.

If I had this choice then I would go for one of the places you've never been before. Venice is beautiful at any time of the year, but depends what you want to do, and see.

Thanks for your replies. I'm hoping to take my sister somewhere when she visits me in the UK later this year. We'd both enjoy somewhere which is architecturally beautiful, rich in culture and buzzing with activity. I do want to vist Edinburgh at some stage, but I think I would prefer to go over to the continent for a change from Britain. Has anyone been to Lisbon, Bologna or Madrid? Would like to hear your opinions!

Rachel,
Distinctive architecture, fascinating history, a culture that incorporates Memling, Van Eyck and a charming Madonna and Child of Michelangelo, superb dining, the tranquility of a lovely beguinage, windmills and canals all suggest Brugge - a delightful spot much closer to Britain than Barcelona, Venice or any of your other listed locations. By going to Brugge, you'd save a good bit of travel time compared to your other listed locations, time you can devote to reveling in the delights of one of Europe's most charming small cities.
