Do you have any recommendations for a place to eat in Pisa, with good food, and I can sit outside? I would love to sit outside overlooking the countryside or perhaps have a nice view of the Leaning Tower. Thanks so much!

I had lunch one day with a jolly good view of the Tower. The meal was fine, neither particularly memorable or expensive, but it was OK, and I do remember the great view of the Tower!

There are plenty of sidewalk cafés near the Tower, but we did not try any, unfortunately, so I don't have info for that area.

I can recomment Spaghetteria alle Bandierine which is close to the Arno River in the old town. It is very good food, excellent service and they do have a couple of tables outside. Located at Via Mercanti, 4 in Pisa

We also injoyed a meal at the Osteria dei Cavalieri , near the piazza Cavalieri, their fried bread with prosciutto-mmmm! www.osteriacavalieri.pisa.it
No outside terasse, though.

On the main street, Borgo Largo, at #39 we had an excellent mixed antipasti plate to start and 2 pasta dishes at

Again, no terrasse, but our absolute favorite place is Hostaria Pizzeria Le Repubbliche Marinare (other side of the river) on

Lastly, closest to the tower that we ate was a GREAT pizza place on the corner where the roman ruins are if you follow Borgo Largo up. I will try to find the name.

The Antica Gelateria del Borgo is located on the via Borgo Stretta, not the "Borgo Largo."

I once ate in view of the Tower, and it was some of the worst food I've ever eaten anywhere in Italy.

Just off the Borgo Stretta is the piazza delle Vettovaglie, where Pisa has its decidedly untouristy outdoor vegetable market, which has been going on in that location for centuries. It is an atmospheric spot. There are a couple of trattorie and pizzerie in the piazza which people have told me they have enjoyed, but I've not eaten there.

I don't know of any recommended restaurants along the Arno, but I think the part that runs through Pisa is actually more attractive than the part that runs through Florence.

Anyway, it's not hard to find and was really enjoyable. The big fancy pastry shop a few doors down on the same side, also has outside seating...wowzers!

Weird, indeed, since Google shows it on the map on Borgo Stretto, 39. My recollection is that it is on the Borgo Stretto, but my recollection is at least 5 years old.

Perhaps the solution would be for Jill to call before going.
