Where to base ourselves with 1 year old for a month in S. Italy?
Hello,
We are 2 people plus one year old traveling through Italy. We want to rent a house preferably with a pool for the month of May. We will have a car. Would like to be in a town that is suitable for taking day trips to other towns and close to beach. Thinking of Messina or Taormina but am open to other suggestions.
Question:
Can anyone recommend websites for this search?
Any other towns to stay in for a month?
Many thanks

Hello - personally, I love the Puglia region. It is my favorite region in Italy - in my opinion it's like stepping back in time a bit. The area known as the Valle d'Itria is magical and near some amazing towns - Martina Franca, Cisternino, Locorotondo, Ostuni. This is the area where the structures called "trulli" are located - google and take a look. From Martina Franca it is about 45 minutes to the Mediterranean seaside and even less time to the Adriatic seaside. The food in the region is also amazing!

You can also try www.homelidays.co.uk. Be aware that freestanding houses with a pool for two people and an infant are very, very scarce. May is the very beginning of pool or beach season.

Messina is not good--Taormina is too expensive---look at Cefalu in Sicily. However, look at the site www.summerinitaly.com for great rentals on the coast in such places as Minori or Salerno. They are easy to work with.

I am perpetually looking for exactly the same type of rental--a small house with a good pool. (In my case, I need a pool suitable for serious swimming, which is very rare in southern Italy).
In my incessant searching, I found that Puglia is quite a fertile area for well-priced freestanding rentals with pools.
You do not mention your price range, but if your budget is ample, these sites offer beautiful properties:

I agree with Zerlina that you may have to take a house larger than one for only 3 persons.
Another idea is the island of Ischia, where prices are generally a lot lower than on the Amalfi Coast.
Yet another idea, Calabria, near Tropea and Capo Vaticano.
Look, too, at:
