Portpatrick is in the far southwest of Scotland near Stranrear. With the understanding that there are only 3 cities in all of Scotland that could be called "big" (Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, and of those only Glasgow is actually BIG) the nearest largish towns would be Dumfries and Ayr. Both are about 60 miles from Portpatrick.

DANNA, where are you when someone needs you.

To enlarge on Janis's answer, it's in Dumfries and Galloway, right out on the southwest tip. It's essentially a fishing port with some tourism.

It's very pretty and has its own web site at

http://www.portpatrick.co.uk

The nearest city, is probably Carlisle in (whisper)England
