Next week we'll go on holidays to South Germany, and among others, I'm interested in visiting the castle Neuschwanstein. In which Land is it? Bayern or Baden-Württenberg? Is it near Austria or Switzerland? And which is the best route by car or train? <BR>

Jim, <BR> <BR>I couldn't remember exactly where it was, so consulted my old Lonely Planet guidebook. Appears to be in Bavaria, with Fussen being the closest town. That would probably put it nearer Austria than Switzerland. Be sure and find it - it's fantastic! It's been a few years since I was there, and arrived by train from Munich. I plan to take my husband there on one of our future European trips, and would definitely make it a point to stay in Fussen for a night. There was a hike up to a swinging bridge I would have liked to have done, but had to catch a train back out and couldn't. Good travels - let us know on your return if you made it there and how you liked it.

We visited by car from Munich, we headed for Fussen and then got on B17 from there. You'll see Neuschwanstein perched on the mountain to the left. By car was great way to see Bavaria. <BR> <BR>RE: Train---This is what I read on a guide book; never done it myself: if you are heading from Munich, the most popular train is No. 3206 leaving from Hauptbahnhof at 6:50am, changing at Buchloe for the 7:46am for the Fussen train that arrives at 8:57am. If you prefer the bus from Fussen, get on the bus No. 9713 from the Fussen train station to Tegelbergbahn, which goes right to the cable car. The line for the cable car is usually heavier after 9:30am when those coming by train from Munich first arrive. <BR> <BR>Always check schedules before you go. I understand some people get to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and bus from there. <BR> <BR>Be aware the castle is up on a hill and that some people with walking difficulties should consider taking the horse-drawn carriage (8.00 DM). The carriage will drop you at about 5 minutes walk from the castle entrance.

Adding to Maira's post there are also free buses that will take you most of the way up. At the bus drop-off point look for signs for the Marienbrucke, a bridge that will give you a lovely view of the Schloss and the valley. There are a couple of ways back down, we chose a footpath that was quite pleasant. Also nearby, within walking distance is Schloss Hohenschwangau, worth a visit. If time permits, take the gondola to Tegelberg and watch the hang gliders and para-sailers leap off a launch ramp into space!
