where do I stay and whats really cool to do?

I am planning a trip to Paris, Rome, and Tuscany. Where is the best place to stay so we could travel back and forth from one location to the other, and does anyone have any recommendations for excursions besides the Eiffel Tower. Do we rent a car to travel between the 3 places? Would it be cheaper to just rent an apartment or home than a hotel. There will be 3 of us. All single women, and very adventurous (spelling?) Please help me out. Im at a lost just know I want to go to a winery in Tuscany and want to kind of estimate what am facing as far as spending.

Thanks in advance,
European-bound Shuluver!

Do we rent a car to travel between the 3 places?>

Maybe in Tuscany but not to go between Paris and Italy - a long long drive and renting in France and returning a car in Italy can mean very steep drop-off surcharges.

Either fly or take the train - there is a night train between Paris and Milan and Venice - get a private compartment and bring any food and drink aboard and have fun - www.thello.com is the official site for these Thello night trains. by day it's anall-day train ride between Paris and Rome - I'd fly instead of that.

Once in Italy you may want to rent a car if you want to tool around rural Tuscany but if you just want to go to a few iconic hill towns take the train and buses that go everywhere.

Train Rome to say Siena(via changing at Chiusi), one of the nicest of Tuscan hill towns or to a smaller one and base there - Chianti en Greve is a short bus ride from Siena or Florence and has several wineries in town. You could base in Florence and do day trips to the hill towns but if not interested in Florence base in a hill town and drive or take buses between them- buses are safe, cheap and again go everywhere.

For lots of info on trains and night trains check www.ricksteves.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.seat61.com; www.trenitalia.com if the official site of the Italian State Railways

Answering a few questions will help people here give you good information:

How long do you have for your trip, what time of year would you like to travel, and do any of you have any interests besides visiting a winery? What attracted you and your friends to these particular places? How much would you like to spend on lodging per night?

IMO it will be easiest to fly into one city - say, Rome - and return home from Paris or vice versa. In between, you can fly, drive, or take a train, depending on how much time you have.

Honestly, your questions suggest that you haven't even begun to consult guidebooks, maps, and the obvious internet sites. Please do so and educate yourselves before asking people for general suggestions, which aren't going to help you. There is a wealth of information out there -go get it.

IMO, when IN Paris, one of your best bets for "getting around" is to use the Metro (or perhaps the busses). There are Metro stations all over the place and some are within sight of each other.

However, be very aware of which Metro line your accommodation is closest to AND how many changes you may have to make to get where you want to go.

Once, we stayed in a Marriott which sat between two Metro stations (on the same line) so we thought this is going to be great for getting to things.

WRONG! The line we had to start out on and the hotel's location sometimes required several changes and a lot more time than we wanted to spend to actually GET to the places we wanted to visit.

The www.RATP.fr site has many maps you can look at before making your decision.

I would never rent a car to drive from France to Tuscany if only because of the possible large drop charges that would probably be involved.

You can go to Florence by rail OR you can look at budget flight possibilities by using www.skyscanner.com

You don't sound adventurous at all - you sound like you've never seen a map of Europe or opened a guide book or even a basic website.

You can't travel 'back and forth' from any of those three places. You haven't said how many days you'll be away, what time of year or budget in euro either.

As for the 'excursions besides the Eiffel Tower' - are you 15? Do you know nothing at all about Paris. Like...nothing? Louvre even?

Blueeye,
You belong to that group that has a direct access to my brains (or what passes as brains insofar as I'm concerned ?'

Of course OP is 15 - read the title : none of us would write like that.

Shuluver ... shoe lover ? What the hell is this supposed to mean ?

I'm sorry but you are planning a three destination trip to Europe and the only things you seem aware of are an 'excursion' to the Eiffel Tower and a winery.

I suggest you get a guide book or two (one for Paris and one for Italy at least) and start to work out what things you want to see/do. Then come back w/ a little more focus.

No one can tell you what your budget should be -- Maybe tell us how much you have to spend and we can tell you if it is reasonable or not. How long do you have for the whole trip? Have you booked your flights yet?

You need to fill in a LOT of blanks before anyone can help much.

You really, really, need to get a map, a couple of guide books and look at some basic web sites.

And no, I don;t think this is a 15 year old. There are an awful lot of very naive people out there who have never planned a vacation - except perhaps sitting at a resort - and don't have a clue how to go about it.

But if the OP will provide answers to these few very basic questions of course we can help. But only if she will.

Are you flying into one destination and out from another or are is your flight locked in as in flying into Paris and out from Paris? There is so much more to Paris than just the Eiffel Tower. I've rented an apartment and stayed in hotels in Paris. I prefer a hotel but lots of people rent an apartment.

I also would only fly between Paris and Rome or Rome to Paris and take the train to Florence or where ever in Tuscany from Rome. I'm guessing you will only have maybe 2 weeks which isn't a lot of time but doable. You won't be able to do it all so at least pick out 3 must dos in each place and then go from there.

nytraveler - my question was rhetorical - but yes you are right on the scale of naive people (who probably should take group tours as one wonders if they can navigate an airport let alone two or three countries by themselves).

OP - apologies for my curt response earlier but my scale of disbelief is undiminished. There are hundreds of experiences to be hand in Paris from food tours to cemeteries. Tuscany is a gorgeous place - best seen with a rental car to appreciate its plethora of tiny towns and beautiful views. If you stay in Florence you can easily take the train to Rome but you wouldn't want to move back and forth between the two as that would be expensive and wasting time.

In any case, still need to know how many days, time of year, budget etc. etc.

Sounds like none of the above posters learned anything from the "Can't we be nice" post to which they all contributed. I am so done with all of their garbage posts.

Joannyc: only one (well, two) were close to rude, everyone else I think successfully bit their tongues.

So just how exactly would YOU respond to help this OP.???

Sorry to say that only a couple of posters offered you any valuable information, most gave their standard nasty answers of 'have you even looked at a guide book, go buy some guide books", etc, along with their typical nasty responses.

Hope you find helpful info and have a wonderful trip!

OP, you should fly into one city, e.g. Paris and out of your last city, e.g., Rome. It is called a multi-city flight when booking on your airline site.

Between Paris and Tuscany, I would recommend flying into Florence and renting a car to see the countryside. Return the car in Orvieto and train to Rome for your final location.

Renting a car in one country and returning in another typically carries a large drop off fee. And, in your case does not make sense to drive those distances,

I guess I didn't pass the test of being nice and taking OP's by the hand.

Let us wait for the OP to come back, and give more details - right now it all seems a litlle bit foggy and well organized.

Let wait for whats really cool to say.

Joannyc - where is your advice - admonishing others doesn't count - what do you recommend the OP does to maximise their cool experiences because I see zero input from you to help the OP.

Oh - joannnyc - and just in case I'm not clear - how is the OP to know where Orvieto is?
I recommended the car rental so you piggy back my advice and claim it as your own.

I am utterly clueless as to why OP's (not singling out the shoe lady) flutter up to forums like these and ask for help because they are too lazy to figure out *basics* like how far it is from Rome to Florence ...*example only...in case Sandralist loses the plot...*.

@ OP shulover - you should go to Naples. There is a whole market devoted to shoes.
