Where can I run in London?

I plan to be in London for a week mid-May. Do recreational runners (like me) take to the streets and sidewalks like in many U.S. cities, or do I need to ensure that I'm close to a park or campus? What areas would you suggest I book my hotel room to minimize the effort of getting a run in during the mornings? Thanks in advance.

Jack

I was in London last week and was surprised at the number of runners in Hyde Park...I guess that's the place where the locals run.

I always take a morning run in Hyde Park, it is really lovely. Lots of people run there and there are paved paths as well as some dirt trails (for horses usually) I run on the pavement when it's raining. Hyde Park is very easy to get to via the Tube.
We stayed in a hotel in Lancaster Gate. My husband and daughter went running every day in Hyde Park/Kensington Park.

Last week in London runners were everywhere at lunch time. I was in the "CITY" and they were running by the river around the Millenium Bridge.

Somone told me everyone is in training for the London Marathon.

I liked running first thing in the morning in Hyde Park. Very serene.

Many people jog on the sidewalk in London, although not in the main tourist areas (Covent Garden, Traf Square, Oxford Street etc etc) simply because there isn't room because of the number of people, but if you were staying somewhere like Kensington or Chelsea you would be fine.

Hyde Park is like our Central Park, with running tracks full of recreational joggers, although another place you could go would be the South Bank (near the National Theatre, Tate Modern and the Globe) - this is a long stretch of sidewalk running beside the River Thames, where a lot of people go to jog or stroll on a nice day.
