From Airwise News www.airwise.com/index.html

Greece Urged To Delay New Airport Opening
Feb 10, 2001

"The International Air Transport Association (IATA) urged Greece yesterday to delay the opening of the new Athens airport, saying access roads and support facilities were unfinished.
IATA officials recommended delaying the scheduled March opening after inspecting the new airport at Spata, 10 miles east of the capital.
"Road access to the new airport is of major concern," IATA Director General Pierre Jeanniot, said in a statement. "Very important support facilities such as catering, cargo and aircraft maintenance are (also) still far from finished."
In a country which relies heavily on its large tourism industry, the warning will come as an embarrassment for the government.
More than 11 million tourists visited Greece last year, with about 2.5 million of them flying into Athens.
The government has insisted there will be no delay in the airport's inauguration and that vital sections of the access roads will be ready in time.
Athens International Airport is now located at the city's coastal suburb of Hellenikon".
