I know for a fact thatif he frogs were wild about peas - then this board would be over-run with posts like "Where to get the best puree de pois, facon paysan in Paris"

You just have to make them sound exotic eg: Mutter paneer - lovely Indian side dish

Real life - Mutter paneer = cheesy peas. Brilliant!

I grew up in NZ and peas featured frequently on our dinner plate, There was this Ministry of Health reccommendation that each meal had to something green on the plate- hence peas. The fact that we grew huge amounts of them in the back yard obviously contributed to their availability.
Until now I notice in Australian soaps etc when sitting to eat there is usually something green on the plate much to the amusement of my family because at least once a week I serve peas with Mint!

Don't know, but in Italy they have pizza with chips (French fries), either on top or as a side dish.

Actually I like raw peas when they're fresh in season. So there.

Raw peas are delicious but very slightly poisonous. You'd have to eat a trillion of them to get sick, I think. As a general rule, vegetables, unlike fruits, don't want you to eat them. Fortunately for us we can overpower them and eat as many of them as we want.

I found a recipe for a pasta dish: cook pasta, combined with sauteed mushrooms and green peas, add oil and enjoy. I tried, and was surprised how good the pasta had turned out.

Healthy dish or side, by the way.

Oh, and yellow peas (dried) were very popular in russia among amateur fishermens - cooked and used as fish bait, for river or lake fishing.

IMO, there is nothing better that GOOD fish & chips, with a side of mushy peas. It goes down a treat!

The French have no room to talk. They put an egg on their pizza.

Peas never passed the test when I was growing up. My dog wouldn't eat them when I tried to slip them under the table to her so I just knew they were awful.

Fresh peas, yummy! Frozen peas, OK. Canned peas, never! But you guys are grossing me out - corn in tuna??!!! But I do like corn...

Fresh peas are great, frozen good, and canned peas are okay but I can understand why some people don't like them. What I don't get is mushy peas -- why take something that's good just barely cooked and overcook it?

It may be my tastes. I like almost everything cooked less than most people do.

I like peas -fresh or frozen, never canned. They were definitely the default vegetable in my family when I was growing up. My mother got quite hooked on what she called 'French' peas, the ones with the chiffonade of lettuce gently mixed through, along with a nice knob of butter. Yum, peas! Everyone in the family would eat peas except my oldest brother.

(He would only eat corn or raw carrot & celery sticks for years. He used to sneak his peas into his pockets at dinner...occasionally they went through the washer/dryer cycle and turned into hard little dark green balls, which he then tried to pass off to little siblings, like me, as candy. But I am not holding on to that, really I'm not.)

Corn/tuna/mayo in a sandwich -- missed that and it sounds strange to me. But I do really like the corn & tuna pizzas I have eaten in Japan...

The Princess & the Pea is one of my all time favorites. I completely relate to her. She's not fussy, just selective.
I hate a lumpy uncomfortable bed!

artvark - mushy peas are not just overcooked peas. They are dried marrowfat peas that have been soaked overnight and then boiled until soft. Not at all the same thing as fresh or frozen peas. The tinned variety that a lot of places serve these days are nowhere near as nice as the homemade version that always used to be served in chip shops in my childhood days.

Talking about starch with starch, we had some very starchy meals at New Year in Prague - eg meat stew served with potato dumplings, bread dumplings, and bread on the side!

a throw back to times when hard manual labour was combined wioth cold weather?

I love peas, but not the mushy variety, god I hate those bad boys with a passion, I remember my Mother soaking them on a Saturday night for the Sunday dinner, and because me Father loved them, bless his heart he thought we all did!! Not to mention the ensuing flatulence that followed

I love frozen peas, cooked with a tiny bit of sugar in the boiling water, its gives the peas a lovely flavour.

Well, I think I understand better now why I've never like those nasty mushy peas. I always thought too that they were simply overcooked and mashed up regular peas.

I think I can count on one hand the foods I don't like. Mushy peas is one of them.

Growing up, as a special treat my mother would make creamed peas -- fresh green peas in a cream sauce. Made me gag. I don't know why because I always liked peas and I like almost anything else in a cream sauce. Somehow the two didn't go together for me.

Now, since you mention pease pudding, let me pass on a lesson my father learnt the hard way. If you try and make it in a pressure cooker, make sure you've let all the pressure off BEFORE you open the lid. (My mother wouldn't talk to him for a week).

Great thread! When my sister was young she choked on a pea at the dinner table (though I can't remember I'm going to guess it was a canned pea as most of the vegetables served in my home were canned) - and after that there were no peas for the children! My mother still exempts her grandchildren from having to eat peas because of this!

As an adult I actually like peas - not canned though. Fresh are best, though frozen petite pois are good too. Must have them in tuna noodle casserole (comfort food), pasta with ham, peas and parmesan, and with boiled corned beef and cabbage (the dried yellow ones, cooked mushy in a bag in the same pot as the meat). And nothing beats French Canadien pea soup. Mmmmm.

My boyfriend is another of the starch and starch types - whenever we're having meat and potatoes he wants corn as the vegetable!!

Good thing it's almost lunch time - this thread is making me hungry! Habitant anyone?
